This International Standard specifies an instrumental method for the routine determination of pH using a glass electrode in a 1:5 (volume fraction) suspension of soil in water (pH in H2O), in 1 mol/l potassium chloride solution (pH in KCl) or in 0,01 mol/l calcium chloride solution (pH in CaCl2). This International Standard is applicable to all types of air-dried soil samples, for example pretreated in accordance with ISO 11464.

This International Standard specifies a method for the extraction of trace elements in soil samples using a buffered diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) solution. This method mainly applies to the estimation of the availability of copper, iron, manganese and zinc to plants which grow in the soils. It is preferably applicable to soils having a pH greater than 6. Potentially toxic elements such as cadmium, chromium, nickel and lead can also be determined in the extracts. In soils containing large amounts of one or more of these elements, the efficiency of the extraction of any of these elements can be lessened by exceeding the complexation capacity of DTPA. This International Standard does not specify the methods of measurement of the trace elements in the extracts.

This International Standard specifies a static headspace method for quantitative gas chromatographic determination of volatile aromatic and halogenated hydrocarbons and selected aliphatic ethers in soil. This International Standard is applicable to all types of soil. The limit of determination is dependent on the detection system used and the quality of the methanol grade used for the extraction of the soil sample. Under the conditions specified in this International Standard, the following limits of determination apply (expressed on the basis of dry matter): Typical limit of determination when using gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC/FID): — volatile aromatic hydrocarbons: 0,2 mg/kg; — aliphatic ethers as methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME): 0,5 mg/kg. Typical limit of determination when using gas chromatography/electron capture detection (GC/ECD): — volatile halogenated hydrocarbons: 0,01 mg/kg to 0,2 mg/kg. Lower limits of determination can be achieved for some compounds by using mass spectrometry (MS) with selected ion detection (see Annex D).

This International Standard specifies procedures for the preparation of water and acid extracts of air-dried soils and soil-like materials. The sulfate content of these extracts is determined by a gravimetric method in which barium chloride is added to the water or acid extract and the precipitate of barium sulfate is dried and weighed. The sulfate content is then calculated from the mass of the material used in the analysis and the mass of barium sulfate precipitated. This International Standard is applicable to all types of air-dried soils, for example pretreated according to ISO 11464. This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) at the pH of the soil and of the determination of the content of exchangeable sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in soil. This International Standard specifies a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for qualitative and quantitative determination of herbicides of various substance classes in soils. This method covers triazines including their related metabolites, phenyl urea compounds and other herbicides. Compounds are identified and quantified with UV-detection. The limit of detection for triazines and phenyl urea compounds is ~ 0,01 mg/kg dry matter. It is dependent upon both the compound and the soil matrix.

This International Standard specifies an extraction method and analytical conditions to determine the content of soil phosphorus soluble in sodium hydrogen carbonate solution. After the extraction step, two different methods of colour development are possible. Subclause 4.2 specifies colour development at room temperature. Subclause 4.3 specifies colour development after heating to a high temperature. This International Standard is applicable to all types of soils.

This part of ISO 14869 specifies a method for the dissolution of total contents for the following elements in soils: Na, K, Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Al, Si. This list is not exhaustive, and other elements are applicable for determination, provided — they are not lost during the fusion process, — w > (3 d · V/m) where w is the mass content of the element, expressed in milligrams per kilogram soil, d is the detection limit, in milligrams per litre, for the element and analytical method considered, 3 is a conventional factor, V is the adjusted volume, in litres, of the final solution containing the dissolved sample, and m is the mass of the test portion, in kilograms, — the determination is not adversely affected by the high salt concentration in the resultant solution. The flux proposed in this method is suitable for a wide range of materials, among which soil samples are relatively easy to deal with.

This part of ISO 14869 specifies a method for the complete dissolution, using hydrofluoric and perchloric acids, of the following elements in soils: — Al, Ba, Cd, Ca, Cs, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, V, Zn. This procedure may be appropriate for the subsequent determination of other elements provided their concentrations are high enough relative to the sensitivity of the methods of measurement. The low acid concentration of the final solution allows the use of a large range of analytical devices and the volatilization of silicon simplifies analytical procedures.
