1.1 This test method provides a means for determination of the impedance permeability (µz) of ferromagnetic materials under the condition of sinusoidal current (sinusoidal H) excitation. Test specimens in the form of laminated toroidal cores, tape-wound toroidal cores, and link-type laminated cores having uniform cross sections and closed flux paths (no air gaps) are used. The method is intended as a means for determining the magnetic performance of ferromagnetic strip having a thickness less than or equal to 0.025 in. [0.635 mm]. 1.2 This test method shall be used in conjunction with those applicable paragraphs in Practice A34/A34M. 1.3 The values and equations stated in customary (cgs-emu and inch-pound) or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within this standard, SI units are shown in brackets except for the sections concerning calculations where there are separate sections for the respective unit systems. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

3.1 Permeameters require the use of yokes to complete the magnetic circuit and are therefore inherently less accurate than ring test methods. Refer to Test Method A596/A596M for further details on ring test methods. However, when testing certain shapes as bars or when magnetic field strength in excess of 200 Oe [16 kA/m] is required, permeameters are the only practical means of measuring magnetic properties. 3.2 This test method is suitable for specification acceptance, service evaluation, research and development and design. 3.3 When the test specimen is fabricated from a larger sample and is in the same condition as the larger sample, it may not exhibit magnetic properties representative of the original sample. In such instances the test results, when viewed in context of past performance history, will be useful for judging the suitability of the material for the intended application. 1.1 This test method provides dc permeameter tests for the basic magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials in the form of bars, rods, wire, or strip specimens which may be cut, machined, or ground from cast, compacted, sintered, forged, extruded, rolled, or other fabricated materials. It includes tests for determination of the normal induction under symmetrically cyclically magnetized (SCM) conditions and the hysteresis loop (B-H loop) taken under conditions of rapidly changing or steep wavefront reversals of the direct current magnetic field strength. This method has been historically referred to as the ballistic test method. For testing hard or permanent magnet materials, Test Method A977/A977M shall be used. 1.2 This test method shall be used in conjunction with Practice A34/A34M. 1.3 This test method covers a range of magnetic field strength in the specimen from about 0.05 Oe [4 A/m] up to above 5000 Oe [400 kA/m] through the use of several permeameters. The separate permeameters cover this test region in several overlapping ranges. 1.4 Normal induction and hysteresis properties may be determined over the magnetic flux density range from essentially zero to the saturation induction for most materials. 1.5 Recommendations of the useful magnetic field strength range for each of the permeameters are shown in Table 1.2 Permeameters particularly well suited for general testing of soft magnetic materials are shown in boldface. Also, see Sections 3 and 4 for general limitations relative to the use of permeameters. (A) Although the permeameters are capable of being used at the lower end of the measurement range, the measurement accuracy is reduced.(B)

1.1 This specification covers technically important, commercially available, magnetically hard sintered ferrite permanent magnets. 1.2 Ferrite permanent magnets have residual induction Br from 0.2 T (2000 G) up to about 0.5 T (5000 G) and intrinsic coercive field strength HcJ8201; from 1608201;kA/m (2000 Oe) up to about 400 kA/m (5000 Oe). Their specific magnetic hysteresis behavior (demagnetization curve) can be characterized using Test Method A977/A977M. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to customary (cgs-emu and inch-pound) units which are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This standard is intended to define the test methods used for the determination of the following geometrical characteristics of magnetic steel sheet and strip: - flatness, residual curvature, - edge camber, - deviation from the shearing line due to internal stresses, - burr height of cut edges. This standard applies to magnetic steel sheet and strip intended for the construction of magnetic circuits and corresponding to Clauses B2, C21 and C22 of IEC Publication 404-1.

This standard is intended to classify commercially available magnetic materials. The term "magnetic materials" denotes substances where the application requires the existence of ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic properties. In this standard, the classification of magnetic materials is based upon the generally recognized existence of two main groups of products: soft magnetic materials (coercivity ≤1 000 A/m); hard magnetic materials (coercivity >1 000 A/m). Within these main groups, the classification when appropriate recognizes the following characteristics: the main alloying element and the metallurgical state and physical properties of the material; when possible and convenient, the relationship between these characteristics is identified. A classification by specific areas of application cannot be applied to all materials because different materials can very often be used for the same application depending on the characteristics required.

This part of IEC 60404 establishes a classification of surface insulations for electrical steel sheet, strip and laminations according to their general composition, relative insulating ability and function. These surface insulations are either oxide layers or applied coatings. The purpose of this classification is to create a nomenclature for the various types of surface insulations and to assist users of surface insulations by providing general information about the chemical nature and use of the surface insulations. It is not the intent of this classification to specify insulation requirements in terms of specific values of surface insulation resistance. Such requirements are agreed between the purchaser and the steel producer, where applicable. The classification is used in conjunction with the various specifications for cold rolled electrical steels (see the standards in the IEC 60404-8 series in Clause 2).

This Technical Report reviews methods for measuring magnetically hard materials using pulsed field magnetometers. The methods of measurement of the magnetic properties of magnetically hard materials have been specified in IEC 60404-5 for closed magnetic circuits and in IEC 60404-7 for open magnetic circuits. The measurement result of the magnetic properties of magnetically hard materials at elevated temperatures is given in IEC 61807. Pulsed field magnetometers have been developed to provide rapid measurement facilities to match high speed production rates with 100 % quality control. The object of this report is to describe the principles and practical implications of pulsed field magnetometry in order to enable the full potential of the technique to be considered, including its application using small and large magnets of varying geometries, to various magnetic field strengths and frequencies.
