This document provides requirements and recommendations for human-centred design principles and activities throughout the life cycle of computer-based interactive systems. It is intended to be used by those managing design processes, and is concerned with ways in which both hardware and software components of interactive systems can enhance human–system interaction. NOTE Computer-based interactive systems vary in scale and complexity. Examples include off-the-shelf (shrink-wrap) software products, custom office systems, process control systems, automated banking systems, Web sites and applications, and consumer products such as vending machines, mobile phones and digital television. Throughout this document, such systems are generally referred to as products, systems or services although, for simplicity, sometimes only one term is used. This document provides an overview of human-centred design activities. It does not provide detailed coverage of the methods and techniques required for human-centred design, nor does it address health or safety aspects in detail. Although it addresses the planning and management of human-centred design, it does not address all aspects of project management. The information in this document is intended for use by those responsible for planning and managing projects that design and develop interactive systems. It therefore addresses technical human factors and ergonomics issues only to the extent necessary to allow such individuals to understand their relevance and importance in the design process as a whole. It also provides a framework for human factors and usability professionals involved in human-centred design. Detailed human factors/ergonomics, usability and accessibility issues are dealt with more fully in a number of standards including other parts of ISO 9241 (see Annex A) and ISO 6385, which sets out the broad principles of ergonomics. The requirements and recommendations in this document can benefit all parties involved in human- centred design and development. Annex B provides a checklist that can be used to support claims of conformance with this document.

This document specifies ergonomic principles which apply to the user requirements, design, and procurement of the physical equipment and environment, which contribute to the context of use of interactive systems. It provides requirements, recommendations and explanations related to these principles. In particular, the general principles and requirements specified in this document apply to the standards specifying functional design of furniture and equipment constituting the environment. The principles specified in this document utilize ergonomic knowledge (from the disciplines anthropometry, acoustics, vision, thermal environments, indoor air quality, mechanical vibrations, etc.) to design and evaluate environments that enhance usability (effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction), accessibility, performance and well-being for organized and non-organized use of interactive systems. The intended users of this document include: — developers of systems, products and services; — public and corporate purchasers; — occupational health and safety professionals; — architects and interior designers; — human resource professionals; — usability/ergonomics/human factors professionals.

This International Standard defines methods that allow entry of characters belonging to the repertoire of single and multi-octet coding standards such as ISO/IEC 10646 in a code independent manner using a keyboard or other input/output devices. It is also expected that for implementations of different coding schemes of character sets, this method will be usable, provided that the target character sets have repertoires that are subsets of the universal multiple-octet coded character set (ISO/IEC 10646) or of any other standard character set. More specifically, this International Standard defines four methods, which can be implemented in different scenarios according to the conformance clause: — a basic method for entering a character which involves using its bit representation (canonical or abbreviated form) in ISO/IEC 10646 as a catalog number, whichever underlying code is used for that character; — a method for entering standard keyboard symbols representing the functions used on the keyboard; this method is intended for entering characters corresponding to the visual representation of the keyboard function symbols (according to ISO/IEC 9995-7 symbols and ISO/IEC 10646 characters), with the help of the function keys themselves; — a screen-selection entry method for selecting a character displayed on a screen for data entry; — a feedback method that allows exact identification of characters shown on a screen, for subsequent data entry; This International Standard is intended to complement existing national keyboard layouts or existing input methods optimized for national use. Hence it does not replace any national keyboard entry requirement but is rather a tool to ease entry of the complete character repertoire of ISO/IEC 10646 with the help of already existing national keyboards.

This part of ISO/IEC 13066 defines the responsibilities of different information technology (IT) and assistive technology (AT) functional units in supporting interoperability. It recognizes that AT can be provided both as functional units that are installed or otherwise connected to a system or can be utilized by being provided as a service which is accessed via communications connections. It bases these responsibilities on fundamental IT definitions of major types of functional units. It focuses on the utilization of standard, public interfaces for functional units and on the provision of accessible documentation of their capabilities. This part of ISO/IEC13066 recognizes that IT is implemented both in conventional computer systems and as a major component of other systems within the wider scope of information and communications technology (ICT). This part of ISO/IEC 13066 recognizes the fundamental role of operating systems and application programming interfaces (APIs), in managing interoperability, and in providing guidance to developers of other functional units. It also recognizes that different operating systems will have their own standardized methods of supporting interoperability. This part of ISO/IEC 13066 does not define or require specific technology, commands, APIs, or hardware interfaces. It defers to other existing standards and supports the development of new standards in these areas. It identifies a variety of common accessibility APIs that are further described in other parts of ISO/IEC 13066.

For the purposes of this International Standard, a portable computer is defined as a computer with a screen and an attached keyboard that is capable of running on battery power for extended periods of time and is relatively easy to transport from one location to another by a single individual. This International Standard gives design guidance for product designers; this International Standard indicates those requirements and recommendations contained in ISO/IEC 9995 and ISO 9241-4:1998 that are to be considered in designing portable computers keyboards. This International Standard strives to maintain consistency, as far as practical, between keyboards for portable computers and desktop computers. To accomplish this goal, this International Standard has reviewed ISO/IEC 9995 and ISO 9241-4:1998 to identify those design features of these two base standards which are to be followed, which are exempted from this International Standard and which are permitted variations. This International Standard is intended primarily to apply to full size portable keyboards (e.g. A4). It may also apply to other keyboards outside this scope. ISO 9241-4 contains a proposed alternative method for conformance by a test based on user performance and subjective rating scales. This International Standard consists of two major categories of guidelines for portable computers: 1. Layout characteristics 2. Physical (ergonomic) characteristics

This part of ISO 9241 provides guidelines to users of VDT-based information processing systems with reference to office tasks. This guidance is relevant to both the organization implementing the system and the people using the equipment. The guidance should be applied in accordance with local, regional or national agreements and regulations. The objective of this part of ISO 9241 is to enhance the efficiency and well-being of the individual user by applying ergonomics knowledge in the light of practical experience, to the design of tasks. The ergonomics principles concerned are set out in ISO 6385. The characteristics of the visual display, and the control, workplace and environmental requirements are specified in other parts of ISO 9241. This part of ISO 9241 does not address software and dialogue design.

This part of ISO 9241 establishes image-quality requirements, as well as providing guidelines, for electronic visual displays. These are given in the form of generic — independent of technology, task and environment — performance specifications and recommendations that will ensure effective and comfortable viewing conditions for users with normal or adjusted-to-normal eyesight. This part of ISO 9241 does not address issues of accessibility for people with disabilities. However, it does take into account aspects of the eyesight of older people and could be of value to people dealing with issues of visual impairment in certain cases: the specification of essential characteristics for normal viewing can be used to gauge the severity of different visual abnormalities so that appropriate solutions can be identified. NOTE In addition to the Bibliography, Annex F gives a selected bibliography of documents addressing the needs of people with disabilities, including people with poor, deteriorating or no eyesight.
