The environment and test waveforms defined in this SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) account for the best lighting data and analysis currently available. The quantified environment and levels herein represent the minimum currently required by certifying authorities, consistent with the approach applied in related lightning documents. Lightning, like any natural phenomenon, is probabilistic in nature. Levels and waveforms vary considerably from one flash to the next. These standardized voltage and current waveforms have been derived to represent the lightning environment, and are used to assess the direct effects of lightning on aircraft. The standardized external current waveforms have in turn been used to derive standardized transient voltage and current waveforms which can be expected to appear on the cable bundles and at equipment interfaces. In addition, test waveforms based on current industry best practice are included to supplement these waveforms that are derived directly from the lightning environment. Considerations such as testability and important waveform characteristics that can demonstrate lightning design effectiveness are taken into account. The parameters of the standardized waveforms, both external and derived transients, represent severe versions of each of the characteristics of natural lightning flashes and include all parameters of interest with respect to lightning protection for aircraft. However, it should be noted that in every case more severe versions of each of the characteristics of the standardized waveforms have been recorded in natural lightning flashes as well as additional parameters such as electric field effects in non-conductive structures. The test waveforms provided in this ARP are considered to be adequate for the demonstration of compliance for the protection of an aircraft and its systems against the lightning environment and should be applied in accordance with the aircraft lightning strike zones (see ARP5414) and test methods (see ARP5416 (DRAFT)), and applicable FAA and JAA advisory and interpretive material. This ARP is one of the set of three documents covering the whole spectrum of aircraft interaction with lightning. The purpose of this ARP is to provide the characteristics of lightning that are encountered by aircraft as well as transients appearing at the interfaces of equipment associated with electrical/electronic systems as a result of that interaction. These characteristics are referred to as the aircraft lightning environment. The two other documents provide information on aircraft lightning zoning (see ARP5414) and aircraft lightning testing (see ARP5416 (DRAFT)). The relationship between the three documents is shown in Figure 1.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) defines lightning strike zones and provides guidelines for locating them on particular aircraft, together with examples. The zone definitions and location guidelines described herein are applicable to Parts 23, 25, 27, and 29 aircraft. The zone location guidelines and examples are representative of in-flight lightning exposures. The purpose of this ARP is to provide information to determine the lightning attachment zones which is referred to as Lightning Zoning. This ARP is used in conjunction with two other documents, ARP5412 and ARP5416. The relationship between the three documents is shown in Figure 1. These three documents are used to define the aircraft lightning threat and tests required to support the aircraft lightning protection certification. Lightning zoning is a functional step in demonstrating that the aircraft is adequately protected from both direct and indirect effects of lightning. The purpose of lightning zoning is to determine the surfaces of the aircraft which are likely to experience lightning channel attachment and the structures which may experience lightning current conduction between pairs of entry/exit points. Zoning should be used with the aircraft hazard assessment to determine the appropriate protection for a given aircraft part or location. To determine the appropriate protection for parts and structure in a particular lightning zone, the criticality of the systems or structure in the zone should be considered.

The landing gear system is a major airframe system that needs to be integrated very efficiently to minimize the penalties of weight, cost, dispatch reliability and maintenance. As the landing gear system business develops and large scale teaming arrangements and acquisitions become increasingly common, it may be desirable in some instances to procure an Integrated Landing Gear System. This document provides guidelines and useful references for developing an integrated landing gear system for an aircraft and is divided into four sections: Landing Gear Configuration Requirements; Landing Gear Functional Requirements; Landing Gear System Integrity Requirements; Landing Gear Program Requirements. The landing gear system encompasses all landing gear structural and subsystem elements. Structural elements include shock struts, braces, fittings, pins, wheels, tires and brakes. The subsystem elements include the retraction/extension system (both normal and alternate), the steering system, the braking system (both normal and alternate, manual and automatic), the indication systems and control systems (mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic).

This ARP is intended to cover the warning, caution and advisory indicating system required for aerospace vehicles. This ARP sets forth recommendations for the design and installation of indicating systems. It is recognized that many types of warning indicators and systems are available for the designer to use. This ARP does not recommend any specific system but outlines basic design and installation requirements. The purpose of this ARP is to recommend certain basic considerations which the design engineer should observe when designing a visual warning indicating system.

This document outlines the most common repairs used on landing gear components. It is not the intention of this AIR to replace Overhaul/Component Maintenance or Technical Order Manuals, but it can serve as a guide into their preparation. This document may also be used as a template to develop an MRB (Material Review Board) plan. The recommendations in this document apply to components made of metallic alloys. These recommendations are intended for new manufactured components as well as for overhauled components. The extent of repair allowed for new components as opposed to in-service components is left to the cognizant engineering authorities. Reference could be made to this document when justifying repairs on landing gears. For repairs outside the scope of this document, a detailed justification is necessary. It must be understood that all the repairs listed in this document are not to be applied without the involvement of the cognizant engineer.
