This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) document provides recommended practices for the calibration and acceptance of icing wind tunnels to be used in testing ofaircraft components and systems and for the development of simulated ice shapes. Thisdocument is not applicable to air-breathing propulsion test facilities configured for thepurposes of engine icing tests. Use of facilities as part of an aircraft?s ice protectionCertification Plan should be reviewed and accepted by the applicable regulatory agencyprior to testing. Following acceptance of a test plan, data generated in these facilities maybe submitted to regulatory agencies for use in the certification of aircraft ice protectionsystems and components. Certain types of tests may be appropriate in facilities withcapabilities that are not as rigorously characterized as by the practices defined herein, andthe acceptability of these tests should be coordinated with the applicable regulatory agency.

This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the aerodynamic flow-off requirements for SAE AMS 1424 Type I and SAE AMS 1428 Type II, III and IV. Fluids used to deice and/or anti-ice: a. Large transport type jet aircraft while on the ground where the takeoff rotation speeds generally exceed approximately 100 to 110 knots. (The procedure for this type of aircraft is referred to as the High Speed Ramp Tests). and/or b. Commuter type aircraft while on the ground and when no compensating measures are taken in the aircraft takeoff procedure where the takeoff rotation speeds generally exceed approximately 60 knots. (The procedure for this type of aircraft is referred to as the Low Speed Ramp Tests.) The objective of this standard is to ensure acceptable aerodynamic characteristics of the deicing/anti-icing fluids as they flow off aircraft lifting and control surfaces during the takeoff ground acceleration and climb.

This ARD summarizes and documents the presentations and discussions held at the Ice Shape Measurement and Comparison Techniques Workshop, organized by the SAE AC-9C Aircraft Icing Technology Subcommittee. The workshop was held to identify and evaluate methods for measuring ice shapes and for making comparisons of such measurements between two or more ice shape profiles. A brief update of these methods, current at the time of this report, is also included. The purpose of this report is to document the state of the art in the field of ice shape measurement. This field is rapidly evolving and improvements in the techniques for ice shape measurement are likely to be developed in the near future.
