This British Standard gives recommendations and guidance for the preservative treatment of timber to provide protection against biodeterioration in certain specified end-use situations in the United Kingdom. It recommends levels of penetration and retention of preservative, from the classes defined in BS EN 351-1, for different timber components and takes into account the natural durability and treatability of the timber employed, the biological hazard class and the desired service life. It also provides guidance on establishing whether a specified level of treatment has been achieved. This British Standard applies only to solid wood, including glued laminated timber. It does not apply to panel products, as no European Standards have been published on the preservation of these products. This British Standard does not apply to treatments regarded as remedial in nature or to those primarily designed to influence the performance of timber in fire. NOTE In the United Kingdom, only preservatives approved under the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 [2] are permitted for the treatment of timber.

This Technical Report presents a summary of the research of the S.M.T. Project: F.A.C.T, SMT4 CT96 2135. As such it details the supporting information for the proposals for a new conditioning standard to replace EN 73 and EN 84 and for modification and validation of ENV 12037. The full report is presented and referenced to Technical annexes, which are available on request. The FACT project involved the study of the fate of chosen wood preservatives in field and laboratory tests and the affect on biological performance. The work consisted of four core tasks and associated sub-tasks designed to provide the scientific background to the proposals made. Task 1 This consisted of a study of artificial weathering techniques for the conditioning of treated test blocks prior to biological test. It was originally hoped that it might be possible to relate different weathering cycles to the different climatic conditions found within Europe. However this did not prove possible but it is possible to recommend a single weathering cycle to replace the use of EN 73 and EN 84. A draft experimental standard has been prepared based on the findings of this work. All the supporting data and associated studies are summarised in this Technical report in clauses 5 and 6. Task 2 This task consisted of an extensive field test based on ENV 12037 and associated sub-tasks. The method proved very robust but significant modifications are recommended and the ENV is to be redrafted in the light of results contained in this report. This field test should be considered as ‘simulated service trial’ rather than an accelerated field test; a concept that needs careful consideration within the EN 599 framework. Sub-tasks 2.3 and 2.4 examined the suitability of the method for composites and the testing of naturally durable timbers. At this stage it is too early to make recommendation for their inclusion in the standard but the results look promising and the method will probably be modified at a later revision. Tasks 3 and 4 These tasks examined the role of bio-conditioning of test samples in ‘use class’ 3 and 4. The results are presented in clauses 8 and 9 and clearly indicate the importance of this subject. It is recommended that urgent attention is given to taking this work further particularly for the testing of organic based preservatives. Although not yet ready for standardisation, the results presented here will prove invaluable to industry in designing development programmes for the new generation of organic based preservatives. In summary: a new experimental standard will be produced to replace EN 73 and EN 84 for the physical conditioning of test blocks; ENV 12037 will be modified to take into account the extensive findings of the project; the use of ENV 12037 for natural durability and composite testing will be considered when more results are available; further work on biological conditions is urgently recommended.

This Technical Report specifies a laboratory method of determining the pentachlorophenol content of wood. The method is applicable to all types of PCP- treated wood and wood-based materials as well as for the analysis of waste timber with respect to its PCP content. The method has a quantification limit corresponding to 100 μg PCP per kilogram of wood material expressed as dry matter. The method described has a measurement range up to PCP contents of 25 mg/kg of dry matter. These figures refer to the given example (where an aliquot of 1 ml of the extract is used for acetylation, see 8.4). NOTE 1 If lower quantification limits are required, a higher volume of extract aliquot can be used for derivatisation. NOTE 2 This method could have some modifications with some wood species as hardwoods.

1.1 This specification provides a procedure for testing and evaluating duration of load and creep effects of wood and wood-based materials relative to an accepted duration of load adjustment model. This specification was created for products that are currently covered by a consensus standard (for example, lumber, structural composite lumber and structural-use panels). This procedure is intended to demonstrate the engineering equivalence to the duration of load and creep effects of visually graded lumber as specified in Practice D 245 for a product under evaluation used in dry service conditions. This procedure is not intended to evaluate the performance of products under impact loading. Quantification of specific duration of load or creep factors is beyond the scope of this specification. For further guidance regarding the applicability of this specification refer to X1.1 in the Commentary.1.2 Use of the procedure in this specification to determine equivalence to the Practice D 245 duration of load relationship is limited to solid wood and wood-based products whose long term load behavior is similar to that of solid wood. Equivalence demonstrated in this specification is dependent upon evaluation of a product's 90-day (minimum) creep-rupture performance. In this evaluation, three criteria must be satisfied: (1) adequate strength over a 90-day period, (2) decreasing creep rate, and (3) limited fractional deflection. A summary of the development of these criteria and the underlying assumptions behind them is provided in the Commentary in Appendix X1 and Appendix X2.1.3 Long term degradation phenomena not described by a creep-rupture model are not addressed in this standard (see Commentary X1.2.4).

1.1 This test method covers the determination of the relative effectiveness of wood preservatives in round posts set in the ground in field plots. Two tests are described, one for small (3 to 5 in. (80 to 130 mm) in diameter) sapwood posts which is the preferred test if major interest lies in testing the preservative when fairly evenly distributed throughout the piece, and the second for large posts (7 to 10 in. (180 to 250 mm) in diameter) which is preferred when the preservative is tested under conditions of gradient retention and distribution normally encountered in commercial operations.1.2 The requirements for preparation of the material for testing and the test procedures appear as follows:SectionTest Plot4Test Specimens5Treatment Procedure6After-Treatment Handling of Posts7Installation of Posts8Inspection of Specimens9Evaluation of Results10Reports111.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The SI equivalents of inch-pound units may be approximate.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This test method covers a non-chemical, biological procedure for assaying wood for approximate preservative content (Note 1). It requires minimal equipment and technical proficiency. No costly equipment is needed other than a small autoclave for preparing fungal media. It does not require composite samples, such as called for in Specification D1760 to ascertain preservation retentions, therefore it is used to assess retention at individual locations. Note 1--With appropriate, simple adaptation, the method can be used with other products besides wood, such as fungicidal paints and glues. The assaying is done wherever it is convenient, since aseptic precautions are not required except for maintaining a pure stock culture of the assay fungus. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The inch-pound units given in parentheses are for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
