This standard: 1) defines the forces and moments to be taken into account with reference to masses, traction and braking conditions; 2) gives the stress calculation method for axles with outside axle journals; 3) specifies the maximum permissible stresses to be assumed in calculations for steel grade EA1N defined in EN 13261; 4) describes the method for determination of the maximum permissible stresses for other steel grades; 5) determines the diameters for the various sections of the axle and recommends the preferred shapes and transitions to ensure adequate service performance. This standard is applicable to: 6) solid and hollow powered axles for railway rolling stock; 7) solid and hollow non-powered axles of motor bogies; 8) solid and hollow non-powered axles of locomotives3; 9) axles defined in EN 13261; 10) all gauges4. This standard is applicable to axles fitted to rolling stock intended to run under normal European conditions. Before using this standard, if there is doubt as to whether the railway operating conditions are normal, it is necessary to determine whether an additional design factor has to be applied to the maximum permissible stresses. The calculation of wheelsets for special applications (e.g. tamping/lining/levelling machines) may be made according to this standard only for the load cases of free-running and running in train formation. This standard does not apply to workload cases. They are calculated separately. For light rail and tramway applications, other standards or documents agreed between the customer and supplier may be applied.

This European Standard specifies requirements for the approval of a welding process by a MFBW machine at sites other than fixed plant, as well as the welding contractor together with the requirements for subsequent welding production. Where a MFBW machine is to be used in a static but temporary situation, the requirements of this part of the standard shall apply. It applies to new Vignole R220, R260, R260Mn and R350HT grade rails of 46 kg/m and above, as contained in EN 13674-1, welded by a MFBW machine at sites other than a fixed plant and intended for use on railway infrastructures. This European Standard applies to the welding of rails into welded strings.

This European Standard specifies the requirements for the homologation of track geometry quality parameters as measured by various measuring devices fitted on track recording vehicles. These measuring devices are described in Part 2 of the standard. This European Standard applies to all track geometry parameters including track gauge, longitudinal level, alignment, cross level (cant / superelevation) and twist. It defines each parameter and specifies the requirements for measurement, the analysis methods and the presentation of results. Parts 3 and 4 give a description of measuring devices complying partially with this Part 1 according to the specificities of respectively track construction and maintenance machines, and manual and lightweight devices,

1.1 General This European Standard defines the specific technical railway requirements for working with machines and other vehicles used for construction, maintenance and inspection of track, structures, track formation and fixed electric traction equipment as specified in EN 14033-1. This European Standard applies to all railbound machines and other vehicles - referred to as machines - working exclusively on the railway (utilising adhesion between the rail and rail wheels) and used for construction, maintenance and inspection of track, structures, infrastructure and fixed electric traction equipment. This European Standard applies to machines that are intended to operate signalling and control systems. Other similar machines are dealt with in other European Standards, see Annex M. Additional requirements can apply for working on infrastructures with narrow gauge or broad gauge lines, lines of tramways, railways utilising other than adhesion between the rail and rail wheels and underground infrastructures. This European Standard is applicable to 1 435 mm nominal track gauge. Some requirements may be applicable for working on infrastructures with nominal narrow track gauge or nominal broad track gauge lines, lines of tramways, railways utilising other than adhesion between the rail and rail wheels and underground infrastructures. This European Standard covers the safety requirements for the railway specific problems for working on different infrastructures. The application of these requirements is the object of a verification procedure, which does not form part of this European Standard, but an Annex J is included for information. In all cases an authorisation to work is required to access the infrastructure. This European Standard is also applicable for machines that in working position are partly supported on the ballast or the formation. This European Standard does not apply to -- the requirements with regard to the quality of work, including the related measuring methods, and the performance of the machine;l) the specific requirements established by each railway infrastructure manager for the use of machines which will be the subject of negotiation between the manufacturer and the infrastructure manager. This European Standard does not deal with the following additional requirements: -- working methods; operation in severe working conditions requiring special measures (e.g. work in tunnels or in cuttings, extreme environmental conditions such as freezer applications, high temperatures, corrosive environment, tropical environment, contaminating environments, strong magnetic fields); -- operation subject to special rules (e.g. potentially explosive atmospheres); -- hazards due to errors in software; -- hazards occurring when used to handle suspended loads which may swing freely; -- hazards due to wind pressure greater than normal e.g. pressures caused by the passing of trains at speed in excess of 190 km/h. 1.2 Validity of this European Standard This European Standard applies to all machines, which are ordered after one year from the publication date of this European Standard.

This European Standard defines the minimum requirements for the quality levels of track geometry, and specifies the safety related limits for each parameter as defined in EN 13848-1. This standard covers the following topics: -- description of quality levels; -- relative importance of parameters; -- immediate action limit; -- considerations on other quality levels. This European Standard applies to high-speed and conventional plain line of 1 435 mm and wider gauge railways provided that the vehicles operated on those lines comply with EN 14363 and other vehicle safety standards. For lines covered by the high speed infrastructure TSI, the requirements stated in the HS INS TSI prevail. Any track geometry parameter not covered by the HS INS TSI needs to be compliant with this European Standard.

This European Standard specifies the rules and values for the track alignment design parameters used to determine the maximum operating speeds over tracks with abrupt changes in curvature and, consequently, abrupt changes of cant deficiency. Such conditions occur in the following situations: -- in the diverging tracks in switch and crossing layouts; -- when it is not practical to design an alignment with transition curves; -- if the length of a transition curve is less than the minimum required for plain line track. Engineering requirements specific to the mechanical behaviour of switch and crossing components and subsystems are to be found in the relevant standards. This European Standard presupposes that the homologation of the operating vehicles will be valid and specified for conditions corresponding to the limiting values specified in this European Standard. This European Standard is applicable to abrupt changes in curvature in switch and crossing layouts and plain lines with track gauges of 1 435 mm and wider. Annex C is applicable to track gauges wider than 1 435 mm. This European Standard specifies the requirements for preventing buffer locking. The limiting values specified in this European Standard, when applied at the switch toe, are for switches with tangential geometry (as defined in EN 13232-1). This European Standard need not be applicable to certain urban and suburban lines. This European Standard is not applicable to track alignment requirements for tilting body vehicles. However, Annex H draws the designer's attention to the consequences and the restrictions imposed when tilting vehicles are operated over switch and crossing layouts and alignments without transition curves.

This European Standard specifies the principles and methods for a rig performance test of the system of box housing, rolling bearings, sealing and grease. Test parameters and minimum performance requirements for vehicles in operation on main lines are specified in Clause 6 and Annex A (normative). Different test parameters and performance requirements may be selected for vehicles in operation on other networks. Basic principles for a field test are also determined.
