This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers internal combustion heat exchanger type heaters used in the following applications: a) cabin heating (all occupied regions and windshield heating); b) wing and empennage anti-icing; c) engine and accessory heating (when heater is installed as part of the aircraft); d) aircraft de-icing. This document details the minimum safety, performance, design, and testing requirements for internal combustion heaters and certain auxiliary devices that are considered necessary for the utilization of heaters in fixed and rotary wing aircraft. This standard is to be considered currently applicable and necessarily subject to revision from time to time due to advances in the aircraft industry. This standard is based on practical engineering requirements for aircraft heaters currently in use and is applicable to aircraft heaters that shall be developed to meet future requirements. The requirements of this standard are primarily intended to be applicable to civil aircraft whose primary function is transporting passengers or cargo.

As in SAE J1227 (covering hydraulic components) this practice includes guidelines for levels of acceptance but does not attempt to set those levels. This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) includes general information about the various types and styles of flexible tanks and the tank-mounted fittings that adapt the tank to the surrounding structure and fluid-system plumbing. Recommendations are given relative to the dimensional layout of the tank when these recommendations serve to avoid tank fabrication problems and tank/structure interface problems. As a part of these recommendations, critical dimensions of plumbing adapter fittings are discussed and recommendations made. Tank manufacturing tolerances are given. Recommendations are made relative to cavity design and preparation to facilitate a reliable installation. The special installation requirements of non-self-sealing, self-sealing, and crash-resistant tanks are discussed. This document is not intended to replace the information or requirements of the military and commercial procurement specifications listed in section 2. No attempt has been made, except in a very general way, to include physical property data such as weight and thickness of the composite materials available in the industry. Such materials are too numerous and vary to much between manufacturers. Whenever specific data or advice is required, it is necessary that the tank manufacturers be consulted. The purpose of this document is to supply aircraft fluid-system designers with baseline information pertinent to the application of flexible, removable tanks for power plant fluids without regard to the fluid in the tank.

This procedure is intended to apply to all engine or airframe mounted fuel pumps and controls when required by the applicable specification. The procedure recommends a recirculation system similar to ARP492 to control the fuel properties affecting the fluid and its ability to "release" fuel vapors and dissolved air and have these "re-entrained or dissolved" during the fluid recovery process back to the tank and the original starting conditions. This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) defines procedures for testing aircraft/engine fuel pumps for the purpose of: a. determining two phase ("slugging flow") inlet performance capability; b. determining the pump's resistance to deterioration during an endurance test with the operating conditions defined by the applicable specification which includes two phase ("slugging flow") operation; and c. determining the effects that contaminated fuel operation may have had on two phase ("slugging flow") inlet performance. The procedure recommended herein is intended to produce useful, reproducible, steady state results. This test is not intended to establish maximum starting altitude or rate of climb performance of the pump. This procedure defines recommended test setups, test procedures, and data requirements for testing engine or airframe mounted fuel pumps or controls with pumps for the purpose of determining "slugging flow" inlet performance capability
