This International Standard describes the gas chromatographic determination of 15 chlorophenols (2,3-, 2,4- 2,5-, 2.6-. 3.4- and 3,5-dichlorophenol; 2,3,4-, 2,3,5-, 2,3,6-, 2,4,5-, 2,4,6- and 3,4,5-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,5- and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol) in soil samples. This method can also be applied to other solid samples such as sediments and solid wastes. This International Standard describes an acid-base liquid extraction, followed by acetylation and then liquid/liquid extraction. Determination of mass concentration is then carried out by gas chromatography and electron-capture detection. This method is applicable to chlorophenols at the lowest mass concentrations ranging from approximately 0,01 mg/kg to 0,05 mg/kg depending on the component sensitivity and the quantity of sample used. In some cases complete separation of isomers cannot be achieved, in which case the sum is reported (for instance 2,4- and 2,5-dichlorophenols).

This International Standard specifies a method for the quantitative determination of the mineral oil (hydrocarbon) content in field-moist soil samples by gas chromatography. The method is applicable to mineral oil contents (mass fraction) between 100 mg/kg and 10000 mg/kg soil, expressed as dry matter, and can be adapted to lower limits of detection. This International Standard is applicable to the determination of all hydrocarbons with a boiling range of 175 ?to 525 ? of n-alkanes from CH to CH, of isoalkanes, cycloalkanes alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes and polycyclic aromatic compounds, provided that they are not absorbed on the specified column during the clean-up procedure. This International Stanard is not applicable to the quantitative determination of hydrocarbons kleiner C originating from gasolines. On the basis of the peak pattern of the gas chromatogram obtained, and of the boiling points of the individual n-alkanes listed in annex B, the approximate boiling range of the mineral oil and some qualitative information on the composition of the contamination can be obtained.

This International Standard describes a method for determining the inhibition of the growth and reproductive capability of higher plants by soils under controlled conditions. Two species are recommended : a rapid cycling variant of turnip rape (Brassica rapa CrGC syn. Rbr) and oat (Avena sativa). The duration of test should be sufficient to include chronic endpoints that demonstrate the reproductive capability of the test plants. By using natural test soils, e. g. from contaminated sites or remediated soils, and by comparing the development of the test plants in these soils with reference or standard control soils, the test can be used to assess soil quality, especially the function of the soil as an habitat for plants.

This International Standard specifies a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for qualitative and quantitative determination of herbicides of various substance classes in soils. This method covers triazines including their related metabolites, phenyl urea compounds and other herbicides. Compounds are identified and quantified with UV-detection. The limit of detection for triazines and phenyl urea compounds is ~ 0,01 mg/kg dry matter. It is dependent upon both the compound and the soil matrix.

This European Standard specifies a procedure for complete digestion of raw/digested sludge, suitable for the subsequent determination of phosphorus. NOTE Phosphorus in environmental samples can be present in many forms. This method of pre-treatment enables the analyst to determine all forms - i.e. total phosphorus, by quantitative oxidation yielding an aqueous solution of orthophosphate which should be analysed for phosphate according to method EN ISO 6878, EN ISO 10304~2 or an equivalent validated method. The range of the method is up to 50 g/kg P assuming appropriate dilution of the digest in the final measurement step.

This International Standard describes a method for the determination of the effects of contaminated soils and substances on the survival of the larvae of Oxythyrea funesta. The larvae are exposed to the pollutants by cuticular and alimentary uptake. For contaminated soils, the effects on the survival are determined in the test soil and in a control soil. Depending on the objectives of the study, the control and dilution substrates (dilution series of contaminated soil) are either uncontaminated soil comparable to the soil sample to be tested or artificial soil substrate. Effects of substances are assessed using a defined artificial soil substrate. This International Standard is not applicable to volatile substances, i.e. substances for which Henry's constant or the air/water partition coefficient is greater than 1, or for which the vapour pressure exceeds 0,001 33 Pa at 25 ℃. NOTE This method does not take into account the possible degradation of the substances or pollutants during the test.

This International Standard specifies the determination of the hydraulic conductivity of granular soils (e.g. sand and gravel) using a constant-head method involving a rigid-wall permeameter to measure the laminar flow of water. The procedure establishes representative values of the hydraulic conductivity of granular soils that can occur in natural deposits as placed in embankments, or when used as base courses under pavements. In order to limit consolidation influences during testing, this procedure is applicable only to disturbed granular soils containing not more than 10 % soil passing a 75-μm sieve. This procedure is applicable to the measurement of hydraulic conductivity of compacted samples of sands and gravels containing little or no silt, where flow along the rigid wall of the permeameter has no practical implications on the test results. This International Standard is not applicable to silt and clay, where seepage/flow at the boundaries is not acceptable.
