This document describes the basic requirements for the verification of ultimate and serviceability limit states and the resistance to fatigue either of the noise barrier or its components by means of analytical methods and/or tests. Analytical methods can be used for the determination of the characteristic values and design values. Where sufficient information is not available, the analytical procedure may be combined with results from tests. The following types of test procedures may be used: - Test on small samples for defining detail categories, which may not be covered by Eurocodes (verification procedure A provided within the present European standard); - Test on a global element for defining the limit state against fatigue (verification procedure B provided within the present European standard). In order to verify the assumptions of the design model, a static load test of the components shall be performed according to EN 16727-1. - Alternatively, fatigue resistance of the noise barrier components can be determined for defined loading conditions by mean of full scale tests under a given representative loading (verification procedure C provided within the present standard).

This European Standard provides requirements and measures to deal with the significant and specific railway risks during works on or in proximity of the track and with common principles for the protection of fixed and mobile work sites with trains and/or machines circulating on the working track and trains circulating on the adjacent track(s). Railway risks and protection measures for access and egress to/from the work site are considered in the same way as railway risks and protection measures for work itself. This European Standard is applicable to all operations related to work activities on rail guided systems. Infrastructure of metro, tram and other light rail systems is excluded from the scope. The following specific railway risks are taken into consideration: - Risk 1: Personnel being struck by a train or injured due to wind drag from a train on open working track (safety of the worker); NOTE 1 Risk 1 includes injuring of a worker by machines, material or equipment being struck by a train on the working track. - Risk 2: Personnel being struck by a train or injured due to wind drag from train on adjacent track (safety of the worker); - Risk 3: Personnel being struck by machine or train on blocked track (safety of the worker); - Risk 4: Machines, material or equipment being struck by a train on the adjacent track (safety of the operation/safety of the worker); - Risk 5: Personnel being electrified or electrocuted by fixed electrical equipment (safety of the worker). NOTE 2 Risk 5 includes hazards caused by pantographs of passing trains. This European Standard also provides requirements to the process of installing basic preventive measures when planning new infrastructure or installing corrective measures when adapting existing infrastructure. This European Standard may be extended to third parties when it is considered appropriate and reasonable by the infrastructure manager, if one or more of the five significant risks described inside this standard, arise as

This European Standard defines the laboratory tests and requirements for approval of an aluminothermic welding process using welds produced in workshop conditions. It applies to the joining of new Vignole rails as described in EN 13674-1 of the same profile and steel grade. Compliance with the requirements of this standard does not of itself ensure the suitability of a welding process for specific conditions of track and traffic. The standard does not cover welds made between different rail sections, differently worn rails and different rail grades. In addition to the definitive requirements this standard also requires the items detailed in Clause 4 to be documented. For compliance with this standard, it is important that both the definitive requirements and the documented items be satisfied.

This European Standard defines the requirements for buffers with 105 mm, 110 mm and 150 mm stroke for vehicles or units which use buffers and screw coupling. It covers the functionality, interfaces and testing procedures, including pass fail criteria, for buffers. NOTE 1 Typically, buffers with a stroke of 105 mm are used on freight wagons and locomotives, buffers with a stroke of 110 mm are used on coaches and locomotives and buffers with a stroke of 150 mm are used on freight wagons. It defines the different categories of buffers, the space envelope, static and dynamic characteristics and energy absorption. It includes a calculation method to determine the minimum size of the buffer head to avoid override between buffers. It defines the static and dynamic characteristics of the elastic systems. It also defines the requirements for buffers with integrated crash elements (crashworthy buffers) for tank wagons for dangerous goods. The requirements of this European Standard also apply to buffers of locomotives and passenger coaches which need to meet the crashworthiness requirements of EN 15227 for normal service only. The properties for the energy absorbing function are defined in EN 15227 and the requirements specified in Clause 7 for tank wagons for dangerous goods are not applicable to the buffers of these locomotives and passenger coaches. Diagonal buffers are excluded from this European Standard. For the crashworthy buffers of locomotives, cab cars or passenger coaches according to EN 15227, and tank wagons for dangerous goods or buffers which form part of a combined system consisting of a special buffer and a deformation element, interchangeability with freight wagon buffers is not required, and therefore the requirements of 5.2 (Fixing on vehicle and interchangeability), 5.3 (Buffer dimensions) do not apply, those of 5.4 (Mechanical characteristics of buffers) and 5.6 (Marking) apply with restrictions. NOTE 2 For tank wagon subjected to dangerous goods regulation.

This European Standard deals with requirements for barriers to give users the possibility to prevent workers from entering the danger zone unintentionally by the use of such barriers. This standard defines minimum requirements and test procedures for these barriers concerning the dimensions, the stability and electrical properties. This standard also gives recommendations for the marking (visual demarcation line) where a person would enter the danger zone. For combinations of barriers and TWS see also EN 16704-2-1:2016. This standard contains references to electrical hazards from third rail systems. NOTE Urban rail systems do have the same situations but may have other individual track gauges. EN 16704- 1 does not cover Urban rail systems. The use of barriers as a safety measure has the same intention independently of the kind of railway system. This standard in particular does not deal with: - risk assessment for safety protection on the track during work; - hierarchy of safety measure for safety protection on the track during work; - safety measure to provide safe working and safe train operation in the area of a work site; - national safety regulations to plan and operate barriers in track; - safety regulations and additional requirements e. g. due to national or operational rules or negotiation between the user and the manufacturer; - electrical hazards by different potential of different electrified circuits.

This European Standard specifies basic requirements for the braking of trains hauled by locomotives: - For trains hauled by locomotives and intended for use in general operation each vehicle is fitted with the traditional brake system with a brake pipe compatible with the UIC brake system. NOTE This ensures technical compatibility of the brake function between vehicles of various origins in a train (see 5.4); - For trains hauled by locomotives and intended for use in fixed or predefined formation, the requirements on the vehicle and the train are necessary. In the case of a UIC brake system, this standard applies; if not, the EN 16185 series or the EN 15734 series applies. If concerned, the UIC brake architecture described in this standard (see 5.4) can be used for brakes for multiple unit train and high speed trains and urban rail described in the EN 13452 series, the EN 16185 series and the EN 15734 series. This European Standard also takes into account electrical and electronic control functions and additional brake systems like dynamic brakes and adhesion independent brakes. The brake system requirements, which are specific for on-track machines are set out in EN 14033-1. This European Standard does not apply to Urban Rail rolling stock braking system, which is specified by EN 13452-1.

This standard defines the laboratory tests and requirements for approval of an aluminothermic welding process using welds produced in workshop conditions. It applies to the joining of new, grooved rails as described in EN 14811 of the same profile and steel grade. Welding of construction profiles and machined profiles are not covered in this standard. Compliance with the requirements of this standard does not in itself ensure the suitability of a welding process for specific conditions of track and traffic. The standard does not cover welds made between different rail sections, worn rails or different rail grades. In addition to the definitive requirements, this standard also requires the items detailed in Clause 4 to be documented. For compliance with this standard, it is important that both the definitive requirements and the documented items be satisfied.
