The results of this test method may be used to determine nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide emission concentrations from natural gas combustion at stationary sources. This test method may also be used to monitor emissions during short-term emission tests or periodically in order to optimize process operation for nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide control.1.1 This test method covers the determination of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen (O2) concentrations in controlled and uncontrolled emissions from natural gas-fired reciprocating engines, combustion turbines, boilers, and process heaters using portable analyzers with electrochemical sensors. Due to the inherent cross sensitivities of the electrochemical cells, this test method should not be applied to other pollutants or emission sources without a complete investigation of possible analytical interferences and a comparative evaluation with EPA test methods. 1.1.1 The procedures and specifications of this method were originally developed during laboratory and field tests funded by the Gas Research Institute (GRI). Comparative emission tests were conducted only on natural gas-fired combustion sources. Subsequently, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program conducted further evaluations of electrochemical cell analyzers, which included laboratory tests and field tests on natural gas and diesel-fueled generators. The EPA has reviewed the ETV test results, published additional information, and provided technical input that has been considered in the update of this method. 1.2 This test method contains notes that are explanatory and are not part of the mandatory requirements of the standard. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This International Standard specifies methods for the measurement and evaluation of gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from heavy-duty engines under transient conditions on a test bed. The procedures it defines can be applied to any transient test cycle that does not require extreme system response times; it can therefore be used as an option to the regulated measurement equipment of certification test cycles — usually CVS-type systems — with the approval of the certification agency [among certification test cycles in place are the European transient cycle (ETC) and the US heavy-duty transient cycle (FTP)]. This International Standard is applicable to heavy-duty engines for commercial vehicles primarily designed for road use, but can also be applied to passenger car engines and to engines used for non-road applications. The test equipment specified in this International Standard can also be used in steady-state test cycles, however, if so, the calculation procedures will need to be replaced by those applicable to the particular test cycle.

This International Standard specifies methods for the direct measurement of the concentration of exhaust gas emissions from road vehicles during inspection or maintenance. It is applicable to vehicles having a maximum authorized total mass (ISO-M08, as defined in ISO 1176) not exceeding 3,5t, equipped with controlled ignition engines, but excluding those supplied with a fuel/oil mixture (with or without automatic mixer). The methods can be used, either totally or partially, for — periodic inspections in official garages, — official roadside checks (e.g. by police), and — maintenance and diagnostic operations.

This standard aims at defining the emission measurements for a thermal electric hybrid road vehicle from M1, N1, or M2 category, and for tricycles and quadricycles from the motorcycle types. This standard applies to the above mentioned vehicles whose emission can be tested following the provisions already laid down for conventional vehicles (i.e. Internal Combustion engine vehicle) from the equivalent categories. note:2) Categories of vehicle M1, N1, and M2 are defined in Directive 92/53/EEC. 3) Motor tricyles and quadricycles are defined in Directive 92/61/EEC. In practice, tricycles and quadricycles with a maximum speed over 45 km/h fall within the scope of this standard.
