This Technical Report gives information about bio-lubricants and recommendations for bio-lubricant (and bio-based lubricant) related terminology. These recommendations are based on a discussion of commonly used terms in this field. This Technical Report also briefly describes the current test methods in relation to the characterization of bio-lubricants. It presents recommendations for related standards in the field of biodegradability, product functionality, impact on greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of different renewable raw materials and/or different bio-based contents used during manufacturing of such bio-lubricants forming one product group. The criteria of the European Ecolabel for Lubricants ("EEL") include the terms discussed in this paper. NOTE 1 The European Lead Market Initiative ("LMI") defines the term "bio-based" as described in Table 1. It is important to mention that "bio-based" does not imply "biodegradable". In addition, "biodegradable" does not imply the use of "bio-based" material. NOTE 2 For the purposes of this European Technical Report, the term "% (m/m)" is used to represent the mass fraction.

4.1 The significance of each test method depends upon the system in use and the purpose of the test method as listed under Section 5. Use the most recent editions of ASTM test methods. 1.1 This guide2 covers general information, without specific limits, for selecting standard test methods for evaluating heat transfer fluids for quality and aging. These test methods are considered particularly useful in characterizing biodegradable water free heat transfer fluids in closed systems. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This part of ISO 13357 specifies a procedure for the evaluation of the filterability of lubricating oils, particularly those designed for hydraulic applications, in the presence of water. The procedure only applies to mineral-based oils, since fluids manufactured from other materials (e.g. fire-resistant fluids) may not be compatible with the specified testmembranes. The range of application has been evaluated with oils of viscosity up to ISO viscosity grade (VG) 100, as defined in ISO 3448. Within the range described, the filterability as defined is not dependent on the viscosity of the oil. The procedure is not suitable for some hydraulic oils on which specific properties have been conferred by the use of insoluble/partially soluble additives, or by particularly large molecular species. NOTE Filterability is a prime requirement for lubricating oils used in hydraulic systems because of the fine filters used in this application. This part of ISO 13357 defines a method for assessing the filterability of oils in the presence of contaminating water. It should be noted that some oils will exhibit poorer filterability characteristics in these conditions. ISO 13357-2 should be used to investigate the filterability of an oil which is to be used in applications where the presence of water in the oil is unlikely. An oil which has good filterability in the presence of contaminating water will not necessarily have equally good filterability in dry conditions. An oil having good filterability only when wet is unlikely to be generally acceptable.

This specification covers three types of organic biocides (differentiated by their physical state -liquid, paste or solid) that are soluble in or miscible with water and oil and are intended for use in emulsions of aqueous metal working fluid and aqueous hydraulic fluid. NOTES a) The standards referred to in the specification are listed in appendix A. b) A requirement that must be specified by the purchaser is noted in appendix B. c) Information regarding the verification of the quality of biocides produced to this specification, and the sampling plan that can be used to assess compliance with the specification of a lot of biocide are given in appendix C.

This standard specifies a procedure for the determination of the measurement of the ability of turbine, gear and hydraulic oils to separate entrained air. It is applicable to both mineral and synthetic based products, but the current precision statement only applies to mineral oils. NOTE 1 - Agitation of lubricating and hydraulic oils with air in equipment such as bearings, couplings, gears, pumps and lines, can produce a dispersion of finely divided air bubbles in the oil. If the residence time in the reservoir is too short to allow the air bubbles to rise to the surface, a mixture of air and oil will circulate through the system. This may result in an inability to maintain oil pressure (particularly with centrifugal pumps), incomplete oil films in bearings and gears, and poor hydraulic system performance or failure. NOTE 2 - This standard measures the time for the entrained air content to fall to the relatively low value of 0,20 % [V/V] under a standardized set of test conditions, and hence permits the comparison of the ability of oils to separate entrained air under conditions where a separation time is available. Although the significance of the test results is not fully established, entrained air can cause sponginess and lack of sensitivity in the control of turbine and hydraulic systems. This standard may not be suitable for ranking oils in applications where residence times are short and gas contents are high.
