  abstract:

A new approach for seawater analysis with a combination of an advanced sample handling device, the PC3 FAST system and collision cell technology is demonstrated.

Trace element analysis in seawater with ICP-MS is a challenge principally due to the high matrix. The ultra low level of target elements, compounds the problem. Popular tools to address this problem include chemical preparation, dilution, chelation and pre-concentration.

This poster shows contamination free, completely automated, direct seawater analysis with the FAST system in conjunction with XSERIES 2 and Collision Cell Technology CCT. Validation of the method is performed with the seawater certification materials NASS-5 and CASS-4.

This combination gives significant improvement in throughput, LoDs, accuracy and long term stability with minimal suppression of internal standard.

  Conclusions:

The combination of the Thermo Scientific XSERIES 2 and the ESI PC3-FAST system with methane gas addition provides a valuable routine tool for the direct trace metal analysis of high matrix samples such as seawater. The PC3-FAST sample introduction system with SC autosampler provides a rapid, contamination free sampling technology with full automation for routine analysis. Through implementation of 3rd Generation CCT technology, the XSERIES 2 provides a sensitive and interference free instrumental solution for the trace elemental determination even in such demanding matrices.
