 Conclusions:

This note has demonstrated that a simple single-gas ollision cell mode for multi-element environmental nalysis simultaneously eliminates all polyatomic nterferences of concern in the analysis of environmental amples. Consequently, interference correction equations re no longer required. The removal of interferences esults in better accuracy in real samples and lower etection limits when interfering species are present. This eads to increased confidence in data quality.

This mode produces lower sensitivity for very low ass elements and selenium. This is advantageous for the xtended range analysis of typically high concentration roup I and II elements and linearity can be obtained up o at least 500 ppm for elements such as sodium, otassium, and calcium. If improved detection limits are equired for selenium, hydrogen mode can be used (see the ccompanying application note).

The helium KED mode is simple to set-up, requiring only a single gas and no optimisation of complex interference-specific filtering settings. The set-up can be fully automated with an autotune sequence. Since only one gas mode is used, the long stabilization delays typically associated with multiple mode analyses are not required. This dramatically improves the speed of analysis, allowing the measurement of a typical 29 element environmental method in just 2 1/2 minutes per sample, or 24 samples per hour. This is the fastest interference-free analysis available.
