This Technical Report establishes core concepts for nanotechnology in a model taxonomic framework. It is intended to facilitate communication and promote common understanding.

This part of ISO/TS 80004 is applicable to the use of nanotechnologies in medical diagnostics and therapeutics. Terms relating to the applications of nanotechnology in healthcare might also be addressed in other parts of ISO/TS 80004 and in other documents. Terms relating to the exploitation of material features at the nanoscale for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in relation to human disease come within the scope of this part of ISO/TS 80004. Nanoscale properties can be embodied in materials that contain nanoscale elements, or are themselves of nanoscale dimensions. This part of ISO/TS 80004 does not address: — terms relating to the biological consequences of a nanomaterial, regardless of the nanomaterial's original purpose, or — terminology describing health, safety and environmental consequences. This part of ISO/TS 80004 provides consistent and unambiguous use of terms for healthcare professionals, manufacturers, consumers, technologists, patent agents, regulators, NGOs, and researchers, etc.

IEC 60050-113:2011 gives the general terminology on physical concepts used in the fields of electricity, electronics and telecommunications. Its target is to collect the most usual concepts in space and time, macroscopic physics, mechanics, thermodynamics, particle physics, and solid-state physics, and to present them as terms and descriptions given in logical order according to their interdependence. The descriptions are definitions from the terminological point of view, but they are not always complete definitions in physical sense. Their main goal is to distinguish among particular concepts. In consequence, this part of the IEV should not be regarded as a physical textbook, but rather as a set of terms with their equivalents in many languages and with descriptions in the main IEV languages. This first edition cancels and replaces Sections 111-13, 111-14 and 111-16 of International Standard IEC 60050-111:1996 and its Amendment 1:2005. It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108. The contents of the corrigendum of September 2011 have been included in this copy.

1.1 This standard is the general terminology standard for terms defined in the standards of Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics. 1.2 A term in this standard which lists an attribution to an E11 technical standard indicates that the standard is normative for that term. Any changes in the term definition in the normative standard will be editorially changed in this standard. Any terms added to an E11 standard will be editorially added to this standard with an attribution to that standard. 1.3 Term definitions that are similar to ISO 3534 will be noted in this standard, but ISO 3534 will not be considered normative for any E11 terms.
