1.1 This standard is the compilation of all terminology developed by Committee D13 on Textiles. 1.1.1 This terminology, consists mostly of definitions, which are specific to the textile industry. Meanings of the same terms used outside the textile industry can be found in other compilations or in dictionaries of general usage. 1.1.2 The specific D13 subcommittee (SC) which has jurisdictional responsibility for every item is the first attribution noted after the definition. The SC terminology standard in which all the terms and definitions appear is listed by number after the jurisdiction for the term. The wording of an entry cannot be changed without the approval of the subcommittee which has jurisdiction. Users of this compilation should also review the SC terminology standard listed for more details or interpretations of these terms and their use by the SC having jurisdiction. 1.2 In addition to being a specialized dictionary, Terminology D123 is also a tool for managing the committee's terminology. This includes finding, eliminating, and preventing redundancies, that is, where two or more terms relating the same concept are defined in different words. Redundancies can also occur when one definition is used for two or more terms. 1.3 While the review for clarity and form are the responsibility of the terminology subcommittee, the concept of managing terminology is the broad responsibility of every writer of standards, specifically the task group leader and subcommittee chairman. 1.4 Subsequent to a listing of specific subcommittee compilations, this standard is comprised of the following sections that are listed in the order in which they appear. 1.4.1 Alphabetical listing of terms with definitions followed by SC attribution in brackets and SC terminology standard. 1.4.2 Annex A1 Terms Relating to the Hand of Fabrics. 1.4.3 Annex A2 Industry Accepted Synonyms. 1.4.4 Annex A3 Terminology Taken From D13 Standards That Have Been Withdrawn. 1.4.5 Annex A4 Terminology Relating to Leather. 1.4.6 Annex A5 Terminology Revision Procedures. 1.4.7 Appendix X1 Other Sources of Textile Terminology.

These definitions are divided into two groups: the first group covers general terms, and the second group covers definitions applicable to sampling. The definitions of general terms include some of those encountered by personnel concerned with specifications and procurement of hides, leather and leather products by the Federal Government. The definitions applicable to sampling are mainly to be used in connection with the sampling for, and testing of, physical and chemical properties. Terms adequately defined by unabridged dictionaries are not generally included.

This International Standard defines terms related to harnesses for Jacquard weaving machines used in the textile industry, with the aim of presenting a standardized, prescribed phraseology. It identifies the parts of, and positions on, the harness and establishes a nomenclature for those parts. Excepting special cases, the Jacquard machine is positioned such that the centre of hook insertion for the fully equipped Jacquard machine corresponds to — the centre of drawing-in width in weft direction (see definition 7), and — the centre of comberboard depth, drawing in warp direction (see definition 6). Where there are special rules for the manufacture of a harness, a hook distribution plan is necessary. NOTE In addition to terms given in the two official ISO languages (English and French), this International Standard gives the equivalent terms in German, under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.

The terms and definitions given in this International Standard have been confined to those parts of the spinning machine which are specific to open-end yarn production technology. Terms and definitions which relate to machine parts for which definitions appear elsewhere, for example in ISO 477 and ISO 2205, are not included. NOTE — In addition to terms given in the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), this International Standard also gives in annexes the equivalent terms in German and Italian; these terms have been included at the request of ISO/TC 72 and are published under the responsibility of the committee members of Germany, F.R. (DIN) and of Italy (UNI). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages may be considered as ISO terms and definitions.

This part of ISO 5247 defines the basic terms of parts of weaving machines. These terms are subdivided into the following eight categories: 1 Designation of sides and mesurements 2 Weaving machine frame 3 Drive 4 Warp and fabric control equipment 5 Shedding means 6 Weft insertion elements 7 Devices at selvedges 8 Stop motions in weaving NOTES 1 In addition to terms used in two of the three official ISO languages (English and French), this part of ISO 5247 gives the equivalent terms in the German and Chinese languages; these have been included at the request of ISO/TC 72 and are published under the responsibility of the member bodies for Germany (DIN) and China (CSBTS). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions. 2 The equivalent Chinese terms are presented beginning on page 27.

This part of ISO 8640 defines terms related to the following types of patterning device used on flat warp knitting machines: — lapping devices for warp ends; — patterning presser devices; — fall plate patterning devices; — yarn let-off and yarn tensioning patterning devices; — needle bar stopping devices; — weft insertion devices; — take-up patterning devices. NOTE 1 The figures in this part of ISO 8640 illustrate the working principles of the various aggregates. They do not represent the only, or even the most common, arrangements. In any case, to the extent technically possible, these devices are able to be combined. NOTE 2 In addition to terms and definitions used in two of the three official ISO languages (English and French), this part of ISO 8640 gives the equivalent terms and definitions in the German language; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.
