This standard describes methods to measure the acoustical effects of a simulated median adult wearer on the performance of a hearing aid using: direct simulated real-ear aided measurements (sound pressure developed by a hearing aid in an ear simulator for a given free-field input sound pressure), and insertion measurements (the difference between the sound pressures developed in the ear simulator with and without a hearing aid in place). These test methods are not intended for quality control.

Describes air-conduction hearing-aid measurement methods that are particularly suitable for specification & tolerance purposes. Test methods described are output sound pressure level (SPL) with 90-dB input SPL, full-on gain, frequency response, harmonic distortion, equivalent input noise, current drain & induction-coil sensitivity. Specific configurations are given for measuring input SPL to hearing aid. Allowable tolerances in relation to values specified by the mfr are given for certain parameters.

This standard gives acoustical performance criteria for a device that provides acoustic impedance and exhibits sound-pressure distributions approximating the median adult human ear between an earmold and the eardrum. Two specific embodiments whose performance conforms to these criteria are described. As a simulation of part of a median adult human ear, the occluded ear simulator is suitable for use in test systems such as manikins, where the complete ear is to be simulated.

This international standard is applicable to audio-frequency induction loop systems producing an alternating magnetic field at audio frequencies and intended to provide an input signal for hearing aids operating with an induction pick-up coil. The standard specifies requirements for the field strength in audio-frequency induction loops for hearing aid purposes, which will give adequate signal-to-noise ratio without overloading the hearing aid. The standard also specifies the minimum frequency response requirements for acceptable intelligibility. Methods for measuring the magnetic field strength are specified, and information is given on appropriate measuring equipment (see Annex B), information that should be provided to the operator and users of the system (see Annex C), and other important considerations. The standard does not specify requirements for loop driver amplifiers or associated microphone or audio signal sources, or for the field strength produced by equipment, such as telephone handsets, within the scope of ITU-T P.370.

This standard describes an acoustic coupler for leading an earphone or hearing aid with a specified acoustic impedance when determining its physical performance characteristics, in the frequency range 125 Hz to 8 kHz. This part of IEC 60118 gives recommendations for the purposes of the measurement of the performance characteristics of air-conduction hearing aids of a particular model for production, supply and delivery assurance purposes. The manufacturer usually assigns nominal values.This standard does not relate to mechanical or environmental tests. It should not be used as the basis for the exchange of information about hearing aid characteristics in general, nor is it intended to be used as abasis for fitting hearing aids to individuals.

This report applies to the performance characteristics of hearing aids. Measuring methods that take into account the acoustical influence of the wearer on the performance of hearing aids are important, particularly when the results are to be used to assist in the fitting of hearing aids. The information obtained using this report is likely to be more relevant to the fitting of hearing aids than that provided by publications concerned with type approval and quality control such as IEC Publication 118-0: Hearing Aids: Part 0: Measurement of Electroacoustical Characteristics, and IEC Publication 118-7: Hearing Aids, Part 7: Measurement of Performance Characteristics of Hearing Aids for Quality Inspection for Delivery Purposes. The methods specified in this report require a device such as a manikin to simulate the presence of the wearer. Work on a report for a head and torso simulator is in progress. Pending an agreement on a manikin, it has been found necessary to establish certain guidelines for simulated in situ measurements of hearing aids. The recommended methods are described in this report.
