1.1 This performance specification identifies minimum flame resistance, construction, durability, and labeling requirements of textiles and subassemblies used in the manufacture of protective clothing worn by electrical workers to protect against exposure to momentary electric arc flash and related thermal hazards. 1.1.1 This performance specification does not address coated or laminated fabrics commonly used for rainwear applications in an arc hazard environment. 1.2 This performance specification defines minimum garment manufacturing and labeling requirements to allow users to select garments with appropriate electric arc ratings for protection from their determined electric arc flash hazard environment. 1.2.1 A prior determination of the electric arc flash hazard environment is required in order to select appropriate protective garments. This prior determination is outside the scope of this specification. 1.2.2 The care and maintenance requirements for electric arc flash protective garments are outside the scope of this standard. 1.3 This standard should be used to evaluate and describe the properties of materials, products, or assemblies in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions. It should not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. 1.3.1 The results of this evaluation may be used as elements of a fire-risk assessment that takes into account all of the factors that are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end use. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 7, of this performance specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This part of IEC 61243 is applicable to voltage detecting systems that are single-pole and are capacitively-coupled to live parts. They are used to detect the presence or absence of operating voltage on a.c. electrical systems for voltages from 1 kV to 52 kV, and for frequencies from 162/3 Hz to 60 Hz. This standard is also applicable to phase comparators designed for voltage detecting systems. EMC tests are not included as, at the present time, not enough information about minimum requirements is available. NOTES 1 Except where specified otherwise, all the voltages defined in this standard refer to values of phase-to-phase voltages of three-phase systems. In other systems, the applicable phase-to-phase or phase-to-earth voltages are used to determine the operating voltage. 2 Voltage detecting systems based on fundamentally different principles (for example optical systems, resistive coupling elements) are not covered in this standard but should meet the requirements of this standard where applicable. 3 For frequencies differing from 50 Hz, the values Cs and Ut according to table 1 are valid. The threshold values for It have to be changed accordingly. 4 If in an electrical installation it is verified that the installation is dead by other means than using a voltage detecting system, a different device which can be termed voltage indicating system may be used for service information about the voltage state with reduced requirements concerning tests for clear and reliable indication. If so, this should be clearly stated and made explicit by the manufacturer (see annex F for further details).

International Standard IEC 1219 applies to equipment-for temporary earthing or earthing and short-circuiting of electrically isolated parts of a.c. installations, the disconnection of which has been verified including the absence of voltage, for the protection of workers while work is in progress using lance(s) (see 3.2.2) as the earthing or earthing and short-circuiting device. The standard specifies the performance and safety requirements and tests for lance devices with matching fixed contacts, guiding arrangements, enclosure, insulating elements and earthing cables, if any. The characteristics of the earthing equipment covered by this standard should be defined on the basis of the intensity and duration of the current, and an voltage when needed for insulation purposes. IEC 855 provides the electrical requirements for separate insulating elements of the equipment. Component types or configurations are not specified but should comply with the electrical and mechanical requirements of this standard. This standard is restricted to equipment using copper bars, aluminium bars or iron bars as short-circuiting medium. NOTE - This standard is not applicable to devices containing short-circuiting cables, which follow the requirements given in IEC 1230.

This International Standard is applicable to fully insulating spliced or hook ladders with extension or having a combination of insulating and conductive sections and used for live working on a.c. or d.c. electrical installations at 1 000 V and above for a.c. and 1 500 V and above for d.c. The ladders are classified functionally as Category 1 and Category 2. This standard concerns only ladders made of synthetic material. These ladders are used, to provide access, generally on overhead line structures and to facilitate live working, either hot stick, barehanded or a combination of both.

This standard is applicable to aerial devices (mobile elevating work platforms [MEWP]), with or without the possibility of an additional jib, as a minimum with an insulating upper boom (extending structure), used for live working on the nominal voltage, which is between 1 kV r.m.s. and 800 kV r.m.s., at power frequency. The application of some parts of this standard to d.c. systems is still under consideration. This standard specifies: - the specialized technical characteristics, tests and checks of the insulating parts (boom, extending structure, transmission of controls along the boom, work platform, bucket, accessories, jibs, etc.) required for live working; - the technical characteristics, tests and checks of conducting parts, the conductive properties which are essential for positioning near to, or at, the potential of the live element (part) to be worked on; - the special characteristics which are not necessarily subjected to test, but which are fundamental for ensuring the safety and precision essential to safe working on live parts. Excluded from this standard, but to be observed: - specifications applicable to all kinds of aerial devices (mobile elevated work platforms) which are covered by applicable international standards or national regulations, for example design, calculations, stability requirements, roadway code, employment regulations, etc.; - specifications for those parts of the aerial device (carrier, etc.) not specific to live working; - specifications for personnel electrostatic shielding equipment (the user should provide adequate shielding equipment in accordance with national regulations).

This Technical Report provides recommendations for the selection and testing where necessary of conductor stringing equipment and accessory items used for the installation of overhead conductors and overhead earthwires. Procedures are recommended for proper earthing in order to protect equipment, components and personnel from the induced or fault currents which can result in some circumstances. The equipment under consideration in this Technical Report is used for transmission voltages, which are usually considered to be 100 kV and above, but may be as low as 60 kV. Many of the requirements and tests stated apply also to equipment used in distribution systems with less than 100 kV.

This part of IEC 61243 is applicable to portable voltage detectors with or without a built-in power source to be used on electrical systems for voltages of 1 kV to 36 kV a.c., and frequencies from 15 Hz to 60 Hz. This part applies only to resistive voltage detectors used in contact with the part to be tested, as a single unit or as a separate device completed by an adaptable insulating pole covered in IEC 60855 or IEC 61235. Other types of voltage detectors are not covered by this part of standard. Capacitive voltage detectors are covered in IEC 61243-1. The upper voltage limit is in accordance with the tests described in this part of IEC 61243. Some restrictions on their use are applicable in the case of factory-assembled switchgear and on overhead systems of electrified railways (see annex B). NOTE 1 Except when otherwise specified, all the voltages defined in this standard refer to phase-to-phase voltages of three-phase systems. Resistive detectors may be used in other than three-phase systems, but the applicable phase-to-phase or phase-to-earth (ground) voltage shall be used to determine the operating voltage. NOTE 2 Although this standard does not cover d.c. voltage detectors, some detectors may respond to d.c. voltage.

This International Standard is applicable to electrical insulating gloves and mitts that provide protection of the worker against electric shock. Unless otherwise stated, the use of the term “glove” includes both gloves and mitts. This standard also covers electrical insulating gloves with additional integrated mechanical protection referred to in this document as “composite gloves”. The products designed and manufactured according to this standard contribute to the safety of the users provided they are used by skilled persons, in accordance with safe methods of work and the instructions for use. NOTE Insulating gloves are normally to be used in conjunction with leather protector gloves to provide mechanical protection. Composite insulating gloves are normally used without over-gloves.
