This part of ISO 286 gives values of the limit deviations for commonly used tolerance classes for holes and shafts calculated from the tables given in ISO 286-1. This part of ISO 286 covers values for the upper limit deviations ES (for holes) and es (for shafts), and the lower limit deviations EI (for holes) and ei (for shafts)

This part of ISO 286 establishes the ISO code system for tolerances to be used for linear sizes of features of the following types: a) cylinder; b) two parallel opposite surfaces. It defines the basic concepts and the related terminology for this code system. It provides a standardized selection of tolerance classes for general purposes from amongst the numerous possibilities. Additionally, it defines the basic terminology for fits between two features of size without constraints of orientation and location and explains the principles of “basic hole” and “basic shaft”.

This British Standard gives guidance on the selection of fits given in BS 1916-1. The recommendations apply, in particular, to fits between cylindrical parts, designated as “holes” and “shafts”, in which case the term “size” refers to the diameter of the mating parts. The recommendations are also applicable to parts other than cylindrical, in which case the term “size” refers to a length, width or other dimension. Tables of preferred sizes are included to avoid the indiscriminate selection of dimensions, and their use is strongly recommended.

This part of BS 1916 gives guidance on tolerances, limits and fits for engineering sizes up to 19.69 in. The recommendations apply particularly to fits between cylindrical parts, designated as “holes” and “shafts”, in which case the term “size” refers to the diameter of the mating parts. The data may also be applied in appropriate cases, by suitable selection of the grades of allowance and tolerances, to fits between other than cylindrical mating parts, in which case the “size” refers to a length, width or other dimension instead of to a diameter. The system described in this British Standard comprises suitable combinations of 16 grades of tolerance and 21 types of fit for both hole and shaft, ranging from fits of extreme interference to those of extreme clearance. All but very exceptional engineering requirements are covered, from very coarse work to fine gauge manufacture. A selection of fits for general use is given in Figure 4, and further guidance on tolerances for shafts and holes for a wide range of fits is given in Part 2 of this British Standard, but it is intended that a particular industry or organization extracts and uses those limits which suit its own product. A unilateral hole basis system is recommended but a full range of holes suitable for use on a shaft basis system, unilateral or bilateral, is also included in the tables.

This part of BS 1916 gives guidance on tolerances, limits and fits for large diameters (19.69 in to 125 in). In many industries, components in large sizes are made to interchangeable as well as to matched fits. There are many practical problems, however, in achieving interchangeable manufacture in large diameters, due mainly to difficulties of measurement. Clause 4 and Clause 5 in Section 1 discuss the known difficulties which might be encountered and draw attention to those tolerances and fits where the greater difficulties might be expected to arise. Section 2 puts forward tables of tolerances, deviations and limits for shafts and holes. It is strongly emphasized that these should be regarded as recommendations intended for trial purposes. They are published in the expectation that experience in their use will enable them to be confirmed or modified, and will help to bring to light deficiencies in measuring techniques. An explanation of the system to which this standard forms an extension is contained in BS 1916-1.

This British Standard gives guidance on a system of cone fits and tolerances for cones from C = 1:3 to 1:500 and lengths from 6 mm to 630 mm. The appropriate tolerances of this British Standard can also be used for prismatic workpieces, for example wedges. This British Standard applies to cones which are dimensioned and toleranced according to BS ISO 3040, Method 1, Basic Taper method. This means that the tolerances limit the variation of penetration of mating surfaces, each surface being within two limiting profiles of the same taper corresponding to the maximum material condition (MMC) and the least material condition (LMC). This British Standard is derived from BS EN 20286, and is a complement to BS EN ISO 1119. NOTE For dimensioning and tolerancing cones on drawings, see BS ISO 3040.

This British Standard specifies tolerances and limits for simple forms of limit gauges, such as cylindrical plain plug, ring and gap gauges, for which gauge limits have not been stipulated. It specifies gauge tolerances for workpiece tolerances in the range between 0.009 mm and 3.200 mm and how gauge limits are related to the workpiece limits. It also specifies types of gauge according to size and minimum workpiece tolerance. NOTE Where a workpiece tolerance is outside the range 0.009 mm to 3.200 mm, or if it is not possible to conform to Table 2 regarding type of gauge, gauge tolerance and workpiece size, direct measurement should be used. The gauge tolerances specified are such that the size of any workpiece accepted by a gauge lies within the boundaries constituted by the workpiece limits. Furthermore, the magnitude of the gauge tolerances is consequent upon the amount of the workpiece tolerance only. A wear allowance is provided on all GO gauges, i.e. those that control the maximum material condition of the workpiece.

This standard specifies a system of tolerance grades and required machining allowance grades for the dimensions of castings. It is applicable to the dimensions of cast metals and their alloys produced by various casting manufacturing processes (see clause 5). This standard applies both to general tolerances and/or required machining allowances given on a drawing and to individual tolerances and/or required machining allowances which are shown immediately following a specific dimensions (see clause 11). The system specified applies when the foundry provides the pattern or die equipment or accepts responsibility for proving it.
