4.1 Structural plate structures function structurally as a flexible ring that is supported by and interacts with the compacted surrounding soil. The soil placed around the structure is thus an integral part of the structural system. It is therefore important to ensure that the soil structure is made up of acceptable material and is well constructed. Field verification of soil structure acceptability using Test Methods D1556, D2167, D6938, or D2937, as applicable, and comparing the results with either Test Methods D698 or D1557, in accordance with the specifications for each project, is the most common basis for installation of an acceptable structure. Depending on the backfill used, other qualitative or performance-based methods acceptable to the engineer may also be used. The required density and method of measurement are not specified by this practice, but must be established in the specifications for each project. 4.2 Structural plate structures are also occasionally used in alternative applications not requiring soil-structure interaction for support. Depending on the application the structure may provide temporary or permanent support, confinement, concealment, shielding, or other functions not related to soil-structure interaction. The nature of support required, design requirements, and proper sizing of the structure will be determined by a project design engineer and is not part of the scope of this standard. 1.1 This practice primarily covers procedures, soils, and soil placement for the proper installation of corrugated steel structural plate pipe, pipe-arches, arches, and underpasses produced to Specification A761/A761M, in either trench or embankment installations. This practice also covers installation of structural plate for alternative uses that do not involve backfilling or soil-structure interaction. 1.2 A typical trench installation and a typical embankment (projection) installation are shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Structural plate structures as described herein are those structures factory fabricated in plate form and bolted together on site to provide the required shape, size, and length of structure. This practice applies to structures designed in accordance with Practice A796/A796M. FIG. 1 Typical Trench Installation FIG. 2 Typical Embankment (Projection) Installation 1.3......

5.1 The techniques described herein are used to produce leak-tight soldered joints between copper and copper alloy tube and fittings, either in shop operations or in the field. Skill and knowledge on the part of the operator or mechanic are required to obtain a satisfactorily soldered joint. 1.1 This practice describes a procedure for making capillary joints by soldering of copper and copper alloy tube and fittings. 1.2 This procedure is applicable to pressurized systems such as plumbing, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical, fire sprinkler, and other similar systems. ASME B31.5 and B31.9 reference the techniques used for satisfactory joint preparation. It is also used in the assembly of nonpressurized systems such as drainage, waste, and vent. 1.3 It is not applicable to the assembly of electrical or electronic systems. 1.4 Tube and fittings are manufactured within certain tolerances to provide for the small variations in dimensions associated with manufacturing practice. Applicable specifications are listed in Appendix X1. 1.5 A variety of solders are available that will produce sound, leak-tight joints. Choice of solder will depend upon the type of application and on local codes. For potable water systems, only lead-free solders shall be used, some of which are described in Specification B32. 1.6 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For hazard statements, see the warning statements in 6.4.1, 6.6.1, and 6.6.3.

1.1 This practice is intended for the structural design of corrugated aluminum pipe and pipe-arches, and aluminum structural plate pipe, pipe-arches, and arches for use as culverts and storm sewers and other buried conduits. This practice is for pipe installed in a trench or embankment and subjected to highway, railroad, and aircraft loadings. It must be recognized that a buried corrugated aluminum pipe is a composite structure made up of the aluminum ring and the soil envelope, and both elements play a vital part in the structural design of this type of structure. 1.2 Corrugated aluminum pipe and pipe-arches shall be of annular fabrication using riveted seams, or of helical fabrication having a continuous lockseam. 1.3 Structural plate pipe, pipe-arches, and arches are fabricated in separate plates that when assembled at the job site by bolting form the required shape. 1.4 This specification is applicable to design in inch-pound units as Specification B790 or in SI units as Specification B790M. Inch-pound units and SI units are not necessarily equivalent. SI units are shown in brackets in the text for clarity, but they are the applicable values when the design is done in accordance with Specification B790M. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
