This specification covers joints for precast concrete pipe and box and other sections using preformed flexible joint sealants for use in storm sewers and culverts which are not intended to operate under internal pressure, or are not subject to infiltration or exfiltration limits. Joint material used in horizontal applications is intended to prevent the flow of solids through the joint. The acceptability of the pipe joint and sealant shall be determined by the results of the physical tests prescribed. Bitumen sealants shall be produced from asphalts, hydrocarbon resins and plasticizing compounds reinforced with inert mineral filler and shall contain no solvents. Butyl rubber sealants shall be produced from blends of butyl rubber and refined hydrocarbon resins and plasticizing compounds reinforced with inert mineral filler and shall contain no solvents. The joint design shall consist of a bell or groove on one end of the section and a spigot or tongue on the adjacent end of the joining section. The different test methods for the determination of the composition and physical properties of bitumen or butyl sealants are presented in details. The sections shall be tested hydrostatically in vertical alignment and a sufficient number of sections shall be assembled in straight alignment.

1.1 This specification establishes the criteria for the manufacture, quality assurance testing, inspection, installation, field acceptance testing, and product marking of vitrified clay jacking pipe to be used in microtunneling, the pilot tube method, sliplining, pipe bursting, and in casings and tunnels for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, and storm water. 1.1.1 Sections 3 through 7 and 9 of this specification contain manufacturing, quality assurance testing, inspection, and product marking criteria which are applicable to vitrified clay pipe prior to installation. 1.1.2 Section 8 of this specification contains criteria for the installation and field acceptance testing of vitrified clay pipe. 1.2 This specification also covers materials and test requirements for jointing of the pipe. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. 1.1 This practice covers procedures for testing the joints of installed precast concrete pipe sewer lines, when using either air or water under low pressure to demonstrate the integrity of the joint and the construction procedures. This practice is used for testing precast concrete sewer lines utilizing rubber gasket sealed joints. NOTE 1—The user of this practice is advised that methods described herein may also be used as a preliminary test to enable the manufacturer or installer to demonstrate the condition of sewer pipe prior to delivery. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. NOTE 2—The owner shall specify the following: who will conduct, observe, and furnish labor, material, and measuring devices and pay for the tests; who is responsible for determining local ground conditions; and whether an air or water test is to be used. Pipe shall be accepted by infiltration or exfiltration testing utilizing Practice C969 (C969M). NOTE 4—Test times tabulated and the rate of air loss in this practice are based on successful testing of installed pipelines. However, since air and water have different physical properties, retests of some pipelines not meeting field air tests have been successful when tested with water. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
