This International Standard specifies the performance data that are necessary to state and applicable test methods for different types of compressed air dryers. It is applicable to compressed air dryers working with an effective (gauge) pressure of more than 50 kPa (0,5 bar), but less than or equal to 1 600 kPa (16 bar) and include the following: — adsorption dryers; — membrane dryers; — refrigeration dryers (including drying by cooling); — or a combination of these. NOTE A description of the principles of operation of the dryers within the Scope of this International Standard is given in Annex A. This International Standard identifies test methods for measuring dryer parameters that include the following: — pressure dew point; — flow rate; — pressure drop; — compressed-air loss; — power consumption; — noise emission. This International Standard also provides partial-load tests for determining the performance of energy saving devices or measures. The mounting, operating and loading conditions of dryers for the measurement of noise are given in Annex C. This International Standard is not applicable to the following types of dryers or drying processes: — absorption dryers; — drying by over-compression; — integral dryers.

This International Standard applies to performance tests on turbocompressors of all types. It does not apply to fans and high-vacuum pumps, or to jet-type compressors with moving drive components Turbocompressors comprise machines in which inlet, compression and discharge are continuous flow processes. The gas is conveyed and compressed in impellers and decelerated with further increase in pressure in fixed vaned or vaneless stators. This International Standard is intended to provide standard provisions for the preparation, procedure, evaluation and assessment of performance tests on compressors as specified above. The acceptance test of the performance is based on this performance test code. Acceptance tests are intended to demonstrate fulfilment of the order conditions and guarantees specified in the contract.

1.1 This International Standard establishes standards for the safe design, construction, installation and operation of stationary and skid-mounted air compressors for general use. It specifies requirements to help minimize compressor accidents and defines general safety practices for the field. Potential hazards associated with compressors are listed and detailed under the following headings in clause 6 : a) improper lubrication; b) inadequate cooling; c) mechanical failures; d) personal injury; e) exposure to noise; f) fires and explosions in the pressure system; g) crankcase explosions; h) incorrect installation, operation or maintenance. This International Standard does not cover the prime movers, which are dealt with in other International Standards. 1.2 This International Standard is based on the requirement that the compressor components be designed in accordance with recognized good practice and applicable national standards. 1.3 This International Standard is intended to apply to stationary and skid-mounted air compressors for general use. However, the following types of compressor are specifically excluded : a) compressors with a shaft input less than 2 kW; b) compressors with an effective discharge pressure less than 0,5 bar (50 kPa); c) compressors with an effective discharge pressure exceeding 50 bar (5 MPa); d) compressors specifically supplying air for breathing, diving or surgery; e) compressors used for air brake systems f) ejectors.

This International Standard specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing and preparation for shipment of constant-speed, packaged, integrally geared centrifugal air compressors, including their accessories, for use in the petroleum, chemical and gas service industries. It is also applicable to gas services other than air that are non-hazardous and non-toxic. It is not applicable to machines that develop a pressure rise of less than 35 kPa above atmospheric pressure, which are classed as fans or blowers. NOTE In this International Standard, where practical, US customary units have been included in brackets for information.
