This document specifies a method of extracting, for analysis, water soluble contaminants from a surface by use of flexible cells in the form of adhesive patches or sleeves which can be attached to any surface, regardless of its shape (flat or curved) and its orientation (facing in any direction, including downwards). The method described is suitable for use in the field to determine the presence of water soluble contaminants before painting or a similar treatment. This document does not cover the subsequent analysis of the contaminants that have been dissolved. Methods of analysis suitable for field use are described in other parts of ISO 8502. NOTE The extraction method might give a false negative or not take all the water-soluble material off the surface because of: a) Soluble materials hiding in the crevices or under folds of metal; b) Soluble materials under corrosion layers, passivation layers produced by corrosion inhibitors, oil, grease, or other non-visible thin films.

1.1 This test method describes a procedure for assessing blast cleaning abrasives for the presence of conductivepotential, ionic contaminants by determining the total concentration of water soluble conductive species using a conductivity test. 1.2 This test method does not identify the ionic species present nor provide quantitative results on each species. 1.3 This test method is based on a volume comparison among abrasives of similar sizes. A volume comparison is more closely related to surface area of the abrasives than is a weight comparison. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 Equine surfaces containing wax-oil based coatings/ binders must be treated and cleaned prior to the subsequent material tests described for sand and fiber surfaces. Note: skip this test for surfaces that are not wax coated. 1.2 The procedures described for wax separation employ Soxhlet extraction to remove wax content from the surface and to calculate crude wax percentage in the surface. Procedures are based upon the Soxhlet extraction method, which has been modified for use on equestrian surfaces by Lab/Cor Materials, Seattle, Washington, USA.2 1.3 If synthetic fibers are present, then fiber solubility will need to be considered prior to Soxhlet extraction to ensure that the Soxhlet procedure will not damage fiber integrity. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
