This test method indicates the presence of hydrophilic compounds. These compounds can be an indicator of contaminants in new oil and in used oil, oxidation or deterioration of the oil or materials of construction in contact with the oil.1.1 This test method covers a comparatively rapid procedure particularly applicable for field use for measuring, under nonequilibrium conditions, the interfacial tensions of electrical insulating oils of petroleum origin against water. This test method has been shown by experience to give a reliable indication of the presence of hydrophilic compounds. This test method may not be applicable for highly viscus insulating fluids. 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This International Standard specifies a procedure for the determination of the kinematic viscosity of mineral insulating oils, both transparent and opaque, at very low temperatures, after a cold soaking period of at least 20 h, by measuring the time for a volume of liquid to flow under gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer. It is applicable at all temperatures to both Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids having viscosities of up to 20000 mm × s. It is particularly suitable for the measurement of the kinematic viscosity of liquids for use in cold climates, at very low temperatures (-40 ℃) or at temperatures between the cloud and pour-point temperatures (typically -20 ℃) where some liquids may develop unexpectedly high viscosities under cold soak conditions.

This British Standard specifies requirements for unused and reclaimed oxidation inhibited and uninhibited mineral insulating oils, as delivered, for use in transformers, switchgear and similar electrical equipment in which oil is required as an insulant or for heat transfer. These oils are obtained by the distillation and refining of petroleum. Oils with and without additives are within the scope of this standard. This standard does not apply to mineral insulating oils used as impregnates in cables or capacitors nor to hydrocarbon insulating liquids obtained by synthesis. NOTE. Oils conforming to the requirements of this standard, of the same class and containing no additives, are considered to be compatible with one another and can be mixed in any proportion. This does not necessarily apply to oils containing additives and where the user wishes to mix such oils a check should be made to ensure that the mixture complies with the requirements of this standard.

The method in clause 2 is applicable to water concentrations above 2 mg/kg in liquids having viscosity less than 100 mm2/s at 40°C. The test method in clause 3, where water is extracted by means of a nitrogen stream, is the preferred method for insulating liquids of viscosity higher than 100 mm2/s.

This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentration in non-halogenated insulating liquids by high-resolution capillary column gas chromatography using an electron capture detector (ECD). The method gives the total PCB content and is especially useful when a detailed analysis of PCB congeners is necessary. Other methods, such as IEC 60997, may be used when a less detailed analysis is acceptable. The method is applicable to unused, reclaimed (including dechlorinated and chemically and/or physically treated), or used insulating liquids contaminated by PCBs.
