1.1 This Standard specifies the requirements for single-conductor and multiple-conductor thermoset-insulated wires and cables rated 600 V, 1000 V, 2000 V, and 5000 V, for use in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1, in Canada, Standard for Electrical Installations, NOM-001-SEDE, in Mexico, and the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70, in the United States of America. See Annex A for the complete list of types and voltage ratings covered by this Standard and the specific electrical codes for which they are intended, and Annex B for a summary of construction and test requirements for these types. 1.2 Table 1 provides a summary of the maximum conductor temperature, voltage ratings, and the number of insulated conductors for the types to which this Standard applies. 1.3 This Standard also specifies the requirements for submersible pump cables, with or without jackets, in Deep Well Submersible Water-Pump Cable, Section 7. No type-letter designations are assigned to these cables. 1.4 Products within this Standard might have applications not covered by the electrical codes listed in 1.1.

1.1 The wire connectors covered by these requirements are intended for use with copper conductor in accordance with installations covered by the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70; the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, C22.1; and NOM 001 SEDE, Standard for Electrical Installations. The requirements in this standard cover twist-on style splicing sealed wire connectors intended for installations for applications noted below: a) In accordance with wiring methods where the connector is installed in enclosures rated for the environment and located in dry locations, damp locations, wet locations, below grade, or above grade. b) In lighting systems operating at 30 volts or less (rated 25 amperes and 30 volts, 42.4 volts peak, maximum), and lighting equipment connected to a Class 2 power source; where the connector is located in dry locations, damp locations, wet locations, direct buried locations, below grade, or above grade where protected from direct exposure to sunlight. NOTE: Sealed wire connectors used in these applications do not require the use of an enclosure. c) In Canada, Class 2 circuits located in dry locations, damp locations, wet locations, direct buried locations, below grade, or above grade where protected from direct exposure to sunlight. In the United States and Mexico, Class 2 and Class 3 circuits located in dry locations, damp locations, wet locations, direct buried locations, below grade, or above grade where protected from direct exposure to sunlight. NOTE: Sealed wire connectors used in these applications do not require the use of an enclosure. 1.2 Splicing sealed wire connectors covered by this standard are intended for use with single or multiple conductor underground feeder cable, golf course sprinkler cable, underground low energy cable, irrigation cable, or other cable with insulation acceptable for direct burial, below grade use, or wet locations. 1.3 Splicing sealed wire connectors covered by this standard are intended for use with copper conductor sizes 30 AWG (0.05 mm2) through 6 AWG (13.3 mm2) with currents not exceeding the ampacity of insulated conductors rated either 75 °C (167 °F) or 90 °C (194 °F) and intended for use at 600 V or less. 1.4 For products intended for use in Canada, general requirements are given in CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0.

The scope of this Standard is to provide test procedures based on the above-mentioned documents and devoted to minimize the causes of discrepancy between test results, taking into consideration the large experience accumulated in the last 30 years by numerous test engineers and available in literature, including a CIGRE Technical Brochure specifically referring to this standard (see Bibliography). This Standard describes the current methodologies, including apparatus, procedures and accuracies, for the measurement of conductor self-damping and for the data reduction formats.In addition, some basic guidance is also provided to inform the potential user of a given method's strengths and weaknesses. The methodologies and procedures incorporated in this Standard are applicable only to testing on indoor laboratory spans.

No type-letter designations are assigned to these cables. 1.3 In Mexico, the requirements for multiple-conductor thermoplastic-insulated and -jacketed cables rated 600 V are specified in Annex B. In Canada and the United States, requirements for multiple-conductor thermoplastic-insulated and -jacketed cables are covered in other standards. 1.4 Products for which this Standard provides requirements might have applications not described in the electrical codes listed in Clause 1.1.
