This part of IEC 60034 specifies the IM Code, a classification of types of construction, mounting arrangements and the terminal box position of rotating electrical machines. Two systems of classification are provided as follows: – Code I (see section 2): An alpha-numeric designation applicable to machines with endshield bearing(s) and only one shaft extension. – Code II (see section 3): An all-numeric designation applicable to a wider range of types of machines including types covered by Code I. The type of machine not covered by Code II should be fully described in words. The relationship between Code I and Code II is given in annex A.

This International Standard, which forms part of the ISO 8528 series, specifies criteria, including performance and test methods, for rotary uninterruptible power systems (UPS) arising out of a combination of mechanical and electrical rotating machines. This standard applies to power supplies primarily designed for supplying uninterrupted a.c. power to the consumer. When operated without input mains feed, the power is provided by stored energy and/or reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine and the output power is provided by one or more rotating electrical machines. This part 11 applies to a.c. power supplies primarily designed for supplying uninterruptible electrical power for stationary land and marine use, excluding supplies for aircraft, land vehicles or locomotives. It also excludes power supplies where the output power is generated by static converters. (See IEC 62040-3.) The use of a rotary UPS installation to improve the quality of a.c. power supply, to provide voltage and/or frequency conversion, and to provide peak shaving is also described. For some specific applications (for example, essential hospital supplies, offshore, non-stationary applications, high rise buildings, nuclear, etc.) supplementary requirements may be necessary. The provisions of this part of ISO 8528 should be used as a basis.

This part of IEC 60034 applies to a.c. and d.c. machines and specifies a) rules for the identification of winding connection points; b) marking of winding terminals; c) direction of rotation; d) relationship between terminal markings and direction of rotation; e) terminal marking of auxiliary devices; f) connection diagrams of machines for common applications. Turbine-type synchronous machines are excluded from this standard.

IEC 60034-19:2014 applies to d.c. machines rated 1 kW and above operating on rectifier-fed power supplies, d.c. buses or other d.c. sources and provides standardized methods intended to determine characteristic quantities for conventional and rectifier-fed d.c. machines. These methods supplement the requirements in IEC 60034-1 and IEC 60034-2-1. The main changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: - description of the procedure for black band testing has been detailed and clarified; - procedures for measurement of the magnetization curves under no-load and load conditions have been added.
