This part of IEC 62490 provides the ESL measuring method for the surface mount capacitors for use in electronic equipment. The ESL measurement method can be applicable to the surface mount capacitors with the following properties, but not limited to these: a) capacitance range: 10 μF to 1 000 μF; b) size: L × W = 3,2 mm × 1,6 mm to 7,3 mm × 4,3 mm, H = 4,0 mm; c) ESL range: 5 nH or less.

1. The First Edition of the Standard for Electrochemical Capacitors, UL 810A, which covers electrochemical capacitors for use in equipment such as electronic products, uninterruptible power supplies, emergency lighting, engine starting, and power equipment. These energy storage capacitors, also known as "electric double layer capacitors" , "ultracapacitors", "double layer capacitors", or "supercapacitors"; consist of either individual capacitors or multiple series and/or parallel connected capacitors with or without associated circuitry.

This blank detail specification forms the basis for a uniform procedure for a common Safety Mark. It implements the approval schedule for the safety test described in EN 60939-2, requires a declaration of design for parameters relevant to safety and prescribes conformance tests to be conducted on every lot prior to its release and requalification tests depending on changes to the declared design.

A blank detail specification is a supplementary document to the sectional specification and contains requirements for style and layout and minimum content of detail specifications. In the preparation of detail specifications, the content of 1.4 of the sectional specification shall be taken into account. The use of EN 60939-2-2 may be more appropriate for components where approval and requalification tests contribute considerably to the cost of the product, whereas the employment of this specification may be necessary for components manufactured in mass production. This specification offers the assessment levels D and DZ (Zero defect).
