This part of IEC 61334 describes the requirements of S-SFK (frequency shift keying modulation) in conjunction with the services provided by the physical layer entity and the MAC sublayer. The transmission medium is assumed to be the distribution network on both MV or LV level. The MAC sublayer described in this standard interfaces with the logical link control layer described in IEC 61334-4-32. The three parts - modulation, physical layer and MAC sublayer - are matched to each other so that an optimum cost-performance relation can be achieved. The profile described in this standard is one of several profiles (described in series IEC 61334-5) which are all designed for data transmission via the distribution network. Considering the ongoing technical development in this field, the profiles are published first as technical specifications with the intention to transform into standards those profiles which are successful in practice.

This part of IEC 61334 defines a set of encoding rules - the A-XDR encoding rules - that may be used to derive the specification of a transfer syntax for values of types defined in the DLMS core standard using the ASN.1 notation (see IEC 61334-4-41). These A-XDR encoding rules are also to be applied for decoding such a transfer syntax in order to identify the data values being transferred. The A-XDR encoding rules · are used at the time of communication; · provide optimal encoding for DLMS PDUs. NOTE Provided that A-XDR ensures optimal encoding for DLMS PDUs, it is intended to be the default encoding rule for DLMS-based communication protocols. Nevertheless, the default - and also the possibly usable optional -encoding rules will be specified in the Application Layer document of the given protocol (for example, IEC 61334-4-42), as part of the Application context. note:3) A-XDR stands for Adapted XDR. In fact, these encoding rules are derived from a proven and de facto standard of the Unix world, called XDR (external Data Representation, rfc1014). 4) See footnote 2 of the introduction.

This part of IEC 61334 is applicable to MV phase-to-earth capacitive and screen-to-earth intrusive inductive coupling devices for medium voltage (MV) distribution line carrier (DLC) systems. Non-intrusive inductive coupling devices are not within the scope of this standard. The coupling device ensures a) the efficient transmission/reception of carrier-frequency signals between the DLC transceiver and the power line; b) the safety of personnel and the protection of the low-voltage parts of the installation against the effects of the power-frequency voltage and transient overvoltages. The object of this part of IEC 61334 is to establish definitions, requirements, methods of testing and rated values for phase-to-earth capacitive and screen-to-earth intrusive inductive coupling devices to be used in MV-DLC systems.

This specification describes the requirements of the spread spectrum adaptive wideband (SS-AW) approach which incorporates the services provided by the physical layer entity and the MAC sublayer. The transmission medium is assumed to be the distribution network on both the MV or LV level. The MAC sublayer described in this specification interfaces with the logical link control (LLC) layer described in IEC 61334-4-32. The noise and signal attenuation characteristics of the MV and LV networks require a hierarchical approach, where methods for modulation/demodulation, synchronization, equaliza-tion, error control coding, and media access control are designed specifically for this hostile communications environment. This approach includes a low-level link protocol within the MAC sublayer that incorporates some functions generally associated with a data link control procedure. This specification describes such a hierarchical approach based on a spread spectrum physical layer with fast synchronization enabling short-duration transmissions and adaptive equalization. This coupled with a low-level link protocol, the effective utilization of error correction and detection, and robust medium access management provides a robust, reliable platform for the LLC sublayer. The adaptive component of this approach refers to the equalization method used to compensate for the time-varying nature of the communication channel impairments. The receiver must select appropriate equalization values to adapt to the changing channel characteristics, which can be node-specific, on a frame basis to achieve optimal performance. The equalization parameters are adjusted based on various quality metrics available from the received frame, for example, the Hamming distance of the synchronization preamble, the error-free status of the frame header and data block, if present, or the failure to receive an expected response. The equalization methods are well-known and the precise method is determined by the particular implementation of this specification. This allows cost/performance trade-offs and future improvements to occur without losing compatibility.

This part of IEC 61334 applies to electrical equipment to be used in distribution line carrier (DLC) systems on both medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) distribution networks. It specifies the requirements (frequency bands, output levels, spurious emissions, etc.) for MV and LV distribution networks respectively. It specifies disturbance limits in the frequency range from 3 kHz up to 30 MHz. The upper frequency limit has been fixed at 30 MHz according to the CISPR recommendations for conducted disturbances. It does not specify the signal modulation methods nor the coding methods nor functional features. Environmental requirements and tests are not included. NOTE - In most countries the transmission is subject to regulation. Compliance with this standard does not imply permission to establish communication on a public supply network, between public supply networks and consumer installations, or between consumer installations where this would not otherwise be allowed. The object of this standard is to limit mutual influence between signal transmission equipment in electrical installations and between such equipment and other equipment. In addition, this standard is intended to limit interference caused by signal transmission equipment to sensitive electronic equipment. In some cases, interference caused by other electrical equipment may lead to misoperation of the mains signalling equipment. Guidance on proper use and warning of improper use are included in the installation and operating instructions supplied with each item of equipment. Where appropriate, a notice is attached securely to each product giving the substance of the following warning: Mains signalling must not be used to control equipment that could become a hazard to people or property if it inadvertently operates or fails to operate in any way.

This technical report of type 3 is intended to offer useful information to design a distribution automation system (DAS) using distribution line carrier (DLC) systems for a specific application. For the sake of clarity, the information, useful to design a DAS using DLC systems for a specific application, has been subdivided into three main steps: - the first step concerns the strategic choices determining the architecture of the DAS (clause 3); - the second step deals with the specification of the application processes and the related operational parameters (clause 4); - the third step refers to the facilities that both processing and transmission equipment have to provide in order to cope with the application needs (clause 5). Clause 6 is dedicated to a general valuation of different coupling methods. Clause 7 is instead dedicated to the quality assurance procedures in order to meet the application needs included in a DLC system. Moreover, this technical report contains two annexes: - annex A containing the comparison and evaluation of two different modulation techniques (narrow-band FSK modulation and wide-band modulation); - annex B containing the general outline of a quality plan.
