This International Standard applies to reproducing equipment for digital audio compact discs that conform to the specifications of IEC 908. NOTES 1 For convenience, this reproducing equipment will be referred to as a "CD player " throughout the text of this standard. 2 This standard does not include specifications for listening tests (see IEC 268-13). The object of this standard is to list and define the characteristics affecting the performance of CD players, to stablish conditions and methods of measurement of those characteristics, and to standardize the presentation of results.

This International Standard is applicable to the use of a 16-bit track pair to record 24-bit data words per channel. A requirement for media storing digital audio data with words wider than 16 bits has arisen in the market, influenced by the availability of A/D converters with resolutions higher than 16 bits, and the introduction of digital mixing consoles incorporating signal processing with higher resolution than 16 bits. Digital multitrack tapes, with their enormous data storage capacity, are an ideal medium for such an implementation. The method described herein is also applicable to any other medium with minimum of two tracks

This International Standard specifies the general channel assignment for multichannel audio formats. The general channel assignment as a channel mapping and labeling provides the unified usage of channel assignments for source devices, digital audio interfaces and sink devices. This standard excludes the specification of the exact position of each loudspeaker. It is aimed at consumer applications, but is not targeted for theatrical environments. Up to 32 labels for loudspeaker positions are specified, which can be used for all current multichannel formats.

This International Standard describes the general requirements for reference tapes applicable to various video tape recorder (VTR) formats. The object of this standard is to enable users of magnetic recording systems to compare technical product data from different manufacturers and to enable compatibility within the VTR format. Currently available VTRs, adjusted with the IEC reference tape appropriate to the corresponding IEC VTR standard, should give satisfactory results with currently available tapes. The information within this standard covers existing IEC formats. For future formats the corresponding information will be included in the IEC standard which defines the individual system.
