This International Standard specifies the compression of a high-definition source format to a dual-channel packetized data stream format which is suitable for recording on disc and tape storage devices including the Type D-11 tape recorder. The specification includes a number of basic packetizing operations including the shuffling of the source data prior to compression, both to aid compression performance and to allow error concealment processing in the decoder. The standard also includes the processes required to decode the compressed Type D-11 packetized data format into a high-definition output signal. This standard supports high-definition source formats using 1 920 × 1 080 pixels and the sampling structures as specified in SMPTE 274M and RP 211 at the following picture rates: • 24/1,001/PsF; • 24/PsF; • 25/PsF; • 30/1,001/PsF; • 50/I; • 60/1,001/I where \'PsF\' indicates Progressive segmented Frame and \'I\' indicates Interlaced. The data packet format specified by this standard is used as the source data stream for the associated document which maps this Type D-11 packetized data-stream format together with AES3 data over SDTI.

This standard also specifies two different audio recording modes: 1) common audio mode and 2) pulse code modulation audio mode. PCM audio mode has a limited interchangeability. The main object of this part of IEC 61834 is to establish basic principles applicable to the next generation of digital video cassette recording systems for consumer use for the interest of both users and manufacturers. This part of IEC 61834 specifies the content, format and recording method of the data blocks forming the helical records on the tape containing audio, video, and system data. It describes the specifications for the 1125-line system with a frame frequency of 30,00 Hz (hereinafter referred to as the "1125-60 system") and the 1250-line system with a frame frequency of 25,00 Hz (hereinafter referred to as the "1250-50 system") which are not included in parts 1 and 2. One video channel and four independent audio channels are recorded in the digital format. Each of these channels is designed to be capable of independent editing. The video channel records and reproduces a component television signal in the 1125-60 and 1250-50 systems. In part 3, the data structure of a track is defined by APT = 000b which consists of four areas as described in 4.3.2 in part 1 and AP1 = AP2 = AP3 = 000b. The data structure of MIC is the same as clause 10 in IEC 61834-2.

This part of IEC 61834 is an extension of the SD specification (SD mode) and covers the features necessary to enable a DVCR to record and reproduce PALplus signals. While all DVCRs must have the capability of recording and/or playback in SD (SP) mode, PALplus capability is optional. For this Part 8, the data structure of a track is defined by APT = 000b which consists of four areas as described in 4.3.2 in IEC 61834-1 and AP1 = AP2 = AP3 = 000b. There are two methods for recording the PALplus signal on a DVCR: - method 1: record the partially encoded PALplus signal; - method 2: record the completely decoded PALplus signal. This part is concerned with "Method 1" (baseband helper recording) as this requires an extension to the DVCR SD specification IEC 61834-2. For "Method 2" the DVCR is equipped with a built-in PALplus decoder and the SD specification IEC 61834-2 applies unchanged.

In addition, this standard specifies the content, format, and recording method for longitudinal cue and control tracks. One compressed video channel, eight independent audio channels and subcode data are recorded on tape in the digital form. Each of these channels is capable of independent editing. On the following digital video formats, the helical recordings are synchronized to: – 1080 line/59,94 Hz field frequency; – 1080 line/50 Hz field frequency; – 720 line/59,94 Hz frame frequency. These are hereafter referred to as the 1080/60i, 1080/50i,and 720/60p systems, respectively. Similarly, in this standard, the 60 Hz system nomenclature refers to both 1080/60i and 720/60p systems, whereas, the 50 Hz system refers only to the 1080/50i system. This part of IEC 62447defines the format of the data stream for the synchronous exchange of DV-based audio, data, and compressed video (whose data structure is defined in SMPTE 370M) over the interface defined in SMPTE 305M.
