This technical report describes the contents of calibration tapes for various broadcast VTRs. The objective in using a calibration tape is to adjust the machine so that it will give optimum reproduction of a first-generation verified recording. The calibration signals recorded under controlled conditions on a machine corresponding to the relevant VTR standard. The calibration procedure involves playing back the tape while making the necessary operational adjustments as described in the manufacturer's manual. In addition, trial recordings and the adjustment of the record chain settings should lead to a similar play-back quality as obtained from the calibration tape.

The methods of measurement described in this International Standard concern the assessment of the performance of non-broadcast video tape recorders of the so-called "colour under" type for domestic use. This standard defines test signals, measurement set-ups and measurement conditions for non-broadcast video tape recorders of the so-called "colour under" type for domestic use, so as to make possible the comparison of the results of measurements. Specifying limiting values of the various quantities for acceptable performance is not an object of this standard. The methods of measurement are designed to make possible the assessment of the performance of the complete recorder by using the input/output terminals of the device. This part of IEC 61041 specifies the general requirements for methods of measurement for high-band video tape recorders, including those equipped with Y/C video connector(s) (NTSC/PAL). This part of IEC 61041 is applicable both to machines using normal input/output connectors for the measurement of the composite video signal, and to machines using the Y/C video connector(s) (herein after referred to as S video connectors) for the measurement of the Y/C separated video signal. This part of IEC 61834 is an extension of the SD specification (SD mode) and covers the features necessary to enable a DVCR to record and reproduce PALplus signals. While all DVCRs must have the capability of recording and/or playback in SD (SP) mode, PALplus capability is optional. For this Part 8, the data structure of a track is defined by APT = 000b which consists of four areas as described in 4.3.2 in IEC 61834-1 and AP1 = AP2 = AP3 = 000b. There are two methods for recording the PALplus signal on a DVCR: - method 1: record the partially encoded PALplus signal; - method 2: record the completely decoded PALplus signal. This part is concerned with "Method 1" (baseband helper recording) as this requires an extension to the DVCR SD specification IEC 61834-2. For "Method 2" the DVCR is equipped with a built-in PALplus decoder and the SD specification IEC 61834-2 applies unchanged.

This part of IEC 61041 specifies the general requirements for the calibration tape which is used for measurement of signal characteristics of the playback systems of non-broadcast video tape recorders (NTSC/PAL/SECAM). The calibration tape specified in this part of IEC 61041 applies particularly to the measurement items prescribed in the relevant part of IEC 61041 which require complex test signals, which are unavailable from a general purpose test signal generator. The object of this part is to describe the methods of measurement for non-broadcast video tape recorders. This part of IEC 61041 describes also the procedures for generating the signals and for recording the signals on the calibration tape.

The main object of this part of IEC 61834 is to establish basic principles applicable to the next generation of digital video cassette recording systems for consumer use for the interest of both users and manufacturers. This part of IEC 61834 specifies the content, format and recording method of the data blocks forming the helical records on the tape containing audio, video, and system data. It describes the specifications for the 1125-line system with a frame frequency of 30,00 Hz (hereinafter referred to as the "1125-60 system") and the 1250-line system with a frame frequency of 25,00 Hz (hereinafter referred to as the "1250-50 system") which are not included in parts 1 and 2. One video channel and four independent audio channels are recorded in the digital format. Each of these channels is designed to be capable of independent editing. The video channel records and reproduces a component television signal in the 1125-60 and 1250-50 systems. In part 3, the data structure of a track is defined by APT = 000b which consists of four areas as described in 4.3.2 in part 1 and AP1 = AP2 = AP3 = 000b. The data structure of MIC is the same as clause 10 in IEC 61834-2.

This part of IEC 61834 specifies the content, format and recording method for the data blocks forming the helical records on the tape containing audio, video and system data. This part describes the specifications for the recording of single DVB programmes. The DVB data is delivered to the digital video cassette recorder via a digital interface or by a built-in tuner (IRD). The DVB data consist of an MPEG2 transport stream containing one or more programmes. In DVB, the MPEG2 MP@ML is specified to encode the video signal. The maximum bit rate for the video signal is 15 Mbps. One programme may consist of one video bit stream or several audio bit streams and data bit streams. Due to the varied bit rates of single DVB programmes, several recording modes are specified in order to make efficient use of the storage capacity of the digital video cassette recorder. In addition to the normal play data stream of DVB recording, one or two special trick play data streams may optionally be generated and recorded in the video area. In this part 9, the data structure of a track is defined by APT = 000b which consists of four areas as described in 4.3.2 of IEC 61834-1 and AP1 = AP3 = 000b.
