This part of IEC 60268, is applicable to headphones, headsets, earphones and earsets, intended to be used on, or in, the human ear. It also applies to equipment, such as pre-amplifiers, passive networks and power supplies which form an integral part of the headphone system. It does not deal with: a) safety, for which reference should be made to IEC 60065 or another appropriate standard; b) the characteristics of microphones of headsets, for which reference should be made to IEC 60268-4; c) earphones and other devices for hearing aids, for which reference should be made to IEC 60118-0; d) headphones for audiometry; e) headphones and other devices which form part of an active ear-defender system, although some of its provisions may be applicable. This standard specifies the characteristics which should be included by the manufacturer in specifications, and relevant methods of measurement. It includes a classification of the different types of earphone, mainly characterized by the way in which the transducer is coupled acoustically to the ear, and a classification code which may also be used for marking.

This International Standard is applicable to sounders, which are treated as entirely passive electroacoustic transducer elements. Piezoelectric diaphragms, which are the principal components of piezoelectric sounders, are also included. Buzzers which are sound sources with built-in electric circuits are excluded. The object of this standard is to standardize the definitions relating to these electroacoustic transducers, and to list characteristics to be specified and the relevant methods of measurement.

This part applies to loudspeakers and loudspeaker systems which are provided with a baffle or enclosure. It also applies to systems intended to be assembled by the user (so-called "loudspeaker kits") provided that the instructions for assembly meet ce rtain requirements (see Clause 16). The minimum requirements of this part then apply to the complete device, together with the baffle or enclosure. This pa rt is not applicable to loudspeakers and loudspeaker systems comprising active components. For the combination of loudspeakers and amplifiers reference is made to IEC Publication 581-8: High Fidelity Audio Equipment and Systems; Minimum Performance Requirements, Part 8: Combination Equipment. This standard gives the characteristics to be specified, performance requirements and the relevant methods of measurement for electromechanical volume indicators. The concept of "volume" is a practical way of assigning a numerical value to the magnitude of electrical speech and music programme signals. Since the response of the meter movement of such an indicator to the rapidly varying programme voltage is greatly dependent upon its dynamic characteristics, a standard for volume measurements shall therefore include a specification of these characteristics. The term "vu" (pronounced "vee-you" and written with lower case letters) is used to express volume in terms of vu above or below a specified reference level. This standard does not deal with peak programme level meters which are the subject of IEC 268-10.

Auxiliary passive elements shall be understood to include such elements as attenuators, transformers, filters and equalizers, applied as separate units to be combined with other separate sound system units to constitute a complete sound system. Notes 1. — Auxiliary passive elements which are intended to be mounted as components in a sound system unit and to form a non-interchangeable part of such a unit, are not within the scope of this Recommendation. Some characteristics are to be specified for all types of auxiliary passive elements. These are given in Chapter I and Section One. Further characteristics to be specified for the different types of auxiliary passive elements are given in Section Two, Clauses 17, 18 and 19. 2. — Auxiliary elements may sometimes include electronic amplification, in which case these elements are considered as amplifiers and are dealt with in IEC Publication 268-3, Sound System Equipment, Part 3: Sound System Amplifiers. 3. — If a network has more than four terminals as e.g. a cross-over network, it is nevertheless treated in this Recommendation as an assembly of four terminal networks.

The recommendations in this report apply to loudspeakers intended for residential systems and environments. Although the procedures are specifically designed for loudspeakers which are separate sound system components for either monophonic, two-channel stereophonic or multichannel stereophonic reproduction, they may also be applied to other devices such as complete audio and television receivers with integrated sound. This report gives recommendations for establishing, conducting and evaluating listening tests on loudspeakers. Although various aspects are under continuing discussion, this report is intended to give the general guidelines. Certain aspects may vary – in particular, the listening room may reflect regional construction practices. The tests described in this report are to be performed in a room the size and acoustical properties of which are similar to those of an "average" living room. Specific recommendations about the room size, acoustical properties, arrangements of loudspeakers and listeners, and environmental conditions are given. This Technical Report describes experimental procedures, including recommendations on the choice of programme material and the processing and presentation of the final data. It may be useful, when applying the methods of this publication, to also consider some of the recommendations in AES 20, especially as concerns the range of perceptual attributes as listed in 5.2.2. It should be understood that the topics of experimental design, experimental execution, and statistical analysis are complex, and that only the most general guidelines can be given. It is recommended that professionals with expertise in experimental design and statistics should be consulted or brought in early in the planning of the listening test. The use of multi-channel formats, principally for domestic presentation of cinema, is becoming more widespread. The procedures described in this report are applicable to any number of channels of reproduction. Because of the rapidity with which the practices in this area are evolving, only the most general guidelines are given.
