1.1 This specification2 describes a medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) specification for wireless connectivity using dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) services. This standard is based on and refers to IEEE Standards 802.11, “Wireless LAN Medium Access Control and Physical Layer Specifications,” and 802.11a, “Wireless LAN Medium Access Control and Physical Layer Specifications High-Speed Physical Layer in the 5 GHz Band,” with permission from the IEEE Society. This specification is meant to be an extension of IEEE 802.11 technology into the high-speed vehicle environment. As presented here, this specification contains just enough information to explain the difference between IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.11a operating parameters required to implement a mostly high-speed data transfer service in the 5.9-GHz Intelligent Transportation Systems Radio Service (ITS-RS) band. Potential operations within the Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (UNII) band are also addressed, as appropriate. 1.2 Purpose—The purpose of this specification is to provide wireless communications over short distances between information sources and transactions stations on the roadside and mobile radio units, between mobile units, and between portable units and mobile units. The communications generally occur over line-of-sight distances of less than 1000 m between roadside units and mostly high-speed, but occasionally stopped and slow-moving, vehicles or between high-speed vehicles. This specification also offers regulatory bodies a means of standardizing access to the 5.9-GHz frequency band for the purpose of interoperable communications to and between vehicles at line-of-sight distances on the roadway. 1.3 Specifically, this specification accomplishes the following: 1.3.1 Describes the functions and services required by a DSRC and IEEE 802.11-compliant device to operate in a high-speed mobile environment. 1.3.2 Refers to IEEE 802.11 MAC procedures. 1.3.3 Defines the 5.9-GHz DSRC signaling technique and interface functions that are controlled by the IEEE 802.11 MAC. 1.3.4 Permits the operation of a DSRC-conformant device within a DSRC communications zone that may coexist with multiple overlapping DSRC communication zones. 1.3.5 Describes the requirements and procedures to provide privacy of user information being transferred over the wireless medium and authentication of the DSRC or IEEE 802.11conformant devices. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This International Standard specifies the 25-pole connector and the assignment of contact numbers at the interface between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) or parallel automatic calling equipment (ACE). It is applicable to voice band modems, public data network (PDN) facilities, telegraph signal converters, and automatic calling equipment where CCITT1) Recommendations V.24 and V.28 are applicable. In the case of the PDN attachment through the X.20 interface, the functions of the interchange circuits are in accordance with CCITT Recommendation X.24. In the case of the V.20 type outstation interface, the electrical characteristics are in accordance with CCITT Recommendation V.31 or V.31 bis. International Standard ISO/IEC 2110 additionally provides the dimensions of the connector housing, as well as the recommended means of providing a locking device (latching block) and connector shielding.

1.1 This International Standard specifies galvanic isolation of balanced interchange circuits using optocoupler integrated circuit technology and is provided for data transmission in the two-condition code (e.g. NRZ). The electrical characteristics are compatible with both ISO 8482 and CCITT Recommendation V.11. NOTE Compatible means to allow interoperation with devices having interchange circuits conforming to the electrical characteristics specified in the referenced standards. Annex A shows interoperation with CCITT Recommendation V. 11 interchange circuits in a point-to-point environment. 1.2 The specifications are given in terms of parameters and measurements for an isolated generator and an isolated receiver. These components may be used in twisted pair 2-wire or 4-wire point-to-point connections up to 1 000 m or multipoint connections up to 500 m for speeds up to 2 Mbit/s for point-to-point connections and 1 Mbit/s for multipoint connections. For data signalling rates up to 20 kbit/s, device manufacturers may optimize their component design. 1.3 Options are provided to meet special application requirements, such as — isolated generator high impedance control; — isolated receiver circuit failure detection capability; — line termination in point-to-point configuration. 1.4 This International Standard does not describe a complete equipment interface in terms of mechanical, electrical and functional /procedural specifications.

This Technical Report describes the physical layer connection device for local area networks. This device is sometimes referred to as the medium interface connector and is used between the terminal equipment and the trunk coupling unit for the trunk cable. The connectors described in this document were proposed by ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 6, SC 13, SC 83, IEC TC 46, IEC TC 48, and IEC TC 86. This document focuses the work of all of these groups into one compendium which describes the physical devices which are currently available in the standards world. Data transmission techniques can be divided into two basic classifications: baseband and broadband. They can be further defined by the speeds of the data transmission across the interface. To avoid undue complexity, no attempt is made to describe the cable or wire used in conjunction with the connectors that are described.
