This International Standard specifies a helium test method for detecting and localizing gas leaks in the exhaust systems of road vehicles equipped with an internal combustion engine, in order to improve the quality of exhaust gas measurements. In doing so, it completes the requirements of ISO 3929, applicable regulations and, depending on the leak rate to be detected, ISO 13556. The method is particularly applicable for use in automotive workshops, by end-of-line of automotive and exhaust parts manufacturers, in laboratories prior to exhaust emission tests, and in testing and diagnosis stations.

This specification covers replacement silencing systems (or their components) that are intended to be fitted to motor vehicles of category L only, designed to operate on public roads and first registered after 1 January 1980. NOTE a) The standards referred to in the specification are listed in appendix A. b) Guidance on the verification of the quality of replacement silencing systems is given in appendix B. c) Except under the standardization mark scheme, assessment of compliance with 3.2(c)(2) and 3.2(c)(3) may require special agreement between the supplier and the purchaser (see 5.2).

The basic performance characteristics of greatest interest are air flow restriction or differential pressure, dust collection efficiency, dust capacity, and oil carry-over on oil bath air cleaners. This test code therefore deals with the measurement of these parameters. This International Standard is applicable to air cleaners used on internal combustion engines and compressors generally used in automotive and industrial applications.

A subcommittee within SAE ISTC Division 35 has written this report to provide automotive engineers and designers a basic understanding of the design considerations and high temperature material availability for exhaust manifold use. It is hoped that it will constitute a concise reference of the important characteristics of selected cast and wrought ferrous materials available for this application, as well as methods employed for manufacturing. The different types of manifolds used in current engine designs are discussed, along with their range of applicability. Finally, a general description of mechanical, chemical, and thermophysical properties of commonly-used alloys is provided, along with discussions on the importance of such properties.
