This International Standard specifies a method to verify the gas tightness of the exhaust system of road vehicles equipped with an international combustion engine. It is primarily intended to establish a method to detect and localize exhaust system leaks in order to improve the quality of exhaust gas measurements. It is also intended to complete the requirements of ISO 3929 and applicable regulations. The users of this International Standard are warned that: a) certain engines with high valve overlaps camshaft events, especially engines with eight or more cylinders, may not have all exhaust valves closed when the engine is stopped. This issue may cause the leak test to fail. This situation could be corrected by the disassembly of the exhaust valve actuation mechanism using the vehicle or engine manufacturer's recommended procedure; b) national regulations on the subject of pressurizing should be checked before testing; c) detected leakage can be quantified under certain test conditions. This International Standard also specifies the measurement apparatus and necessary devices. This method is particularly recommended for: a) automotive workshops, b) laboratories before any emission tests, c) testing and diagnostic stations. The measurement apparatus can be used at the end of line of automotive and exhaust parts manufacturers. note:1) ISO 3929:1995, Road vehicles— Measurement methods for exhaust gas emissions produced during inspection or maintenance.

This SAE Recommended Practice applies to vehicle exhaust smoke measurements made using the Snap-Acceleration test procedure. Because this is a non-moving vehicle test, this test can be conducted along the road side, in a truck depot, a vehicle repair facility, or other test facilities. The test is intended to be used on heavy-duty trucks and buses powered by diesel engines. It is designed to be used in conjunction with smokemeters using the light extinction principle of smoke measurement. This procedure describes how the snap-acceleration test is to be performed. It also gives specifications for the smokemeter and other test instrumentation and describes the algorithm for the measurement and quantification of the exhaust smoke produced during the test. Included are discussions of factors which influence snap-acceleration test results and methods to correct for these conditions. Unless otherwise noted, these correction methodologies are to be considered an integral part of the snap- acceleration test procedure.

This test document is applicable to all superchargers not requiring fuel to be added to the inlet air prior to the supercharger. This SAE Standard only applies to bench testing. Any maximum speed, temperature, and pressure ratios supplied by the manufacturer should be for this use only and may not apply to applications of firing engines. This document has been adopted by SAE to specify: a. A standard baiss for supercharger efficiency rating; b. reference inlet air supply test conditions; c. a method for correcting observed efficiency to reference conditions; d. a method for presenting these results in an accurate and usable way; and e. a method to compare superchargers without the affects of engine dynamics and intercooling.
