The requirements of MARPOL Annex V set the minimum standard for garbage management that apply to ships. Applicable national and regional regulations exceeding the requirements of MARPOL Annex V will also need to be observed. This International Standard applies to the management and handling of garbage generated onboard ships during the period the garbage will be onboard. The definition of garbage in this International Standard is as defined in MARPOL Annex V. This International Standard contains procedures for the shipboard management of garbage, including handling, collection, separation, marking, treatment and storage. It also describes the vessel-to-shore interface and the delivery of garbage from the ship to the port reception facility.

This International Standard covers selection criteria to assist procurers in selecting the appropriate incinerator for their needs. This International Standard is a companion document to ISO 13617. This International Standard does not apply to incinerator systems on special incinerator ships, for example, for burning industrial wastes such as chemicals, manufacturing residues, and so forth.

This part of ISO 23269 provides performance specifications of the self-contained air-breathing apparatus (SCBA) (not using stored oxygen) required by the IMO IBC Code (for bulk chemicals) and the IMO IGC Code (for gas carriers) developed by the International Maritime Organization. The breathing apparatus manufactured in accordance with this part of ISO 23269 constitutes an element of the set of safety equipment which permits personnel to enter a gas-filled compartment and perform work there. The breathing apparatus is not intended for use in fighting fires or suitable for entry into flames.

This part of ISO 21072 specifies a methodology for establishing quantitative performance data for oil skimmers for recovery of oil with high viscosity, so the end user can objectively judge, compare and evaluate the design and performance of different skimmers. The methodology applies to testing in a basin and requires control of oil properties and oil slick characteristics. The method is applicable to all types of skimmer provided that the equipment dimensions are within the physical limitations of the test basin. The test procedure provides full-scale test results for the unit tested, under controlled conditions, and for one or more classes of highly viscous oil. Attention is drawn to the care required when applying the test results to predict a realistic skimmer performance under field conditions. For dedicated/inbuilt systems the test procedures outlined in this part of ISO 21072 are only applicable to the skimming device as such, not the entire skimming system.

This part of ISO 16145 describes the characteristics of an automated measuring method by using a conductivity meter for the assessment of the total surface density of various water-soluble salts on steel surfaces prior to coating applications for dedicated sea water ballast tanks, void spaces of bulk carriers and oil tankers, and cargo oil tanks of crude tankers in compliance with PSPC stipulated by IMO Res.MSC.215(82), IMO Res.MSC.244(83), and IMO Res.MSC.288(87). This method describes a procedure for rapid evaluation of the surface of steel for the presence of ionic contamination by determining the total concentration of water-soluble ionic contaminants by means of a conductivity test. This method may be equivalent to ISO 8502-9:1998. NOTE 1 The individual surface densities of chlorides, sulphates, etc. cannot be determined by this method. This method assesses ionic contaminants only. These represent the greater part of the contamination. The ionic contaminants are thus considered as one single contaminant. NOTE 2 This method is used as an alternative measurement method for PSPC when demonstrated to comply with NACE SP0508:2010 as described in the footnote of PSPC regarding seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers and cargo oil tanks.

This part of ISO 21072 provides a methodology for establishing quantitative performance data for oil skimmers under moving water conditions, so that the end user can objectively judge, compare and evaluate the design and performance of different skimmer units. The methodology applies to testing in a basin and requires control of oil properties and oil slick characteristics. The method is applicable to all types of skimmers, provided that the equipment dimensions are within the physical limitations of the test basin. The test procedure provides full-scale test results for the unit tested, under controlled conditions, and for one or more classes of oil. NOTE Care will need to be taken when applying the test results to the prediction of skimmer performance under field conditions.

This part of ISO 17357 specifies the material, performance, and dimensions of high-pressure floating pneumatic rubber fenders, which are intended to be used for the berthing and mooring of a ship to another ship or berthing structure. It also specifies the test and inspection procedures for high-pressure floating pneumatic rubber fenders. This part of ISO 17357 does not address any safety hazards associated with its use. It is the user's responsibility to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations before using this part of ISO 17357.

This part of ISO 21072 specifies a methodology for establishing quantitative performance data for oil skimmers under static water conditions, so the end user can objectively judge, compare, and evaluate the design and performance of different skimmers. The method is applicable to all types of skimmers provided that the equipment dimensions are within the physical limitations of the test basin. This part of ISO 16145 specifies a method of protective coatings and its inspection for dedicated seawater ballast tanks. It is applicable to all types of ships of not less than 500 gross tonnage and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers of 150 m in length and upwards, which are contracted for new building on or after 1 July 2008; or in the absence of a building contract, the keels of which are laid or which are at a similar stage of construction on or after 1 January 2009; or the delivery of which is on or after 1 July 2012. This part of ISO 16145 also is applicable to the dedicated seawater ballast tanks of oil tankers of double hull construction of 150 m in length and upwards and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers of 90 m in length and upwards, which are contracted for new building on or after 8 December 2006. NOTE Double-side skin space is a configuration where each ship side is constructed by the side shell with a longitudinal bulkhead connecting to the double bottom and the deck. Hopper side tanks and top-side tanks may, where fitted, be integral parts of the double-side skin configuration. Therefore, the void spaces or other designated tanks arranged as a part of top-side tank, when provided in the bulk carriers of single-side skin construction, need not be considered as a double-side skin space (see Figures 1 and 2 for details).

It also specifies the minimum test and inspection procedures for floating low-pressure pneumatic rubber fenders. This part of ISO 17357 does not address the methods for selecting the correct fender type or any safety hazards associated with its use.
