1.1.1 This International Standard applies to wrought unalloyed and alloyed steels which are intended for cold heading or cold extruding and are delivered as wire rods, wire or bars. It contains five sections covering the following topics: Section 1 - general requirements common to all sections. Section 2 - steels not intended for heat treatment, with diameters from 2 mm to 100 mm. Section 3 - case-hardening steels with diameters from 2 mm to 100 mm. Section 4 - steels for quenching and tempering including boron treated steels, with diameters from 2 mm to 100 mm. Section 5 - stainless steels with diameters of 2 mm up to 25 mm for ferritic, up to 100 mm for martensitic, and up to 50 mm for austenitic steels. 1.1.2 This International Standard (except section 2) is not applicable to the properties of cold-headed or cold-extruded parts which have not been subjected to a subsequent heat treatment. As the properties of the parts in the cold headed or cold extruded and subsequently not-heat-treated condition are largely dependent on the applied coldheading or cold-extruding conditions, these should, if necessary, be a matter of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer of the parts. 1.1.3 In addition to this International Standard, the general technical delivery requirements of IS0 404 are applicable. 1.1 This specification covers the procedure for Charpy V-notch testing of structural steel and contains two frequencies of testing. The impact properties of steel can vary within the same heat and piece, be it as-rolled, control-rolled, or heat treated. The purchaser should, therefore, be aware that testing of one plate, bar, or shape does not provide assurance all plates, bars, or shapes of the same heat as processed will be identical in toughness with the product tested. Normalizing or quenching and tempering the product will reduce the degree of variation. 1.2 This specification is intended to supplement specifications for structural steel when so specified. 1.3 This specification does not necessarily apply to all product specifications; therefore, the manufacturer or processor should be consulted for energy absorption levels and minimum testing temperatures that can be expected or supplied. 1.4 Two frequencies of testing (P and H) are prescribed. 1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this specification. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
