This part of ISO 3386 specifies a method for the determination of the compression stress-strain characteristics of flexible cellular polymeric materials of density greater than 250 kg/m^(3) The compression stress-strain characteristic is a measure of the load-bearing properties of the material, though not necessarily of its capacity to sustain a long-term load. The compression stress-strain characteristic differs from the indentation hardness characteristics (as determined in accordance with ISO 2439) which are known to be influenced by the thickness and the tensile properties of the flexible cellular material under test, the shape of the compression piate, and the shape and size of the test piece. ISO 3386-1 specifies a method for low-density flexible materials, and differs from Part 2 in the following ways: - Part 1 is concerned with materials of density up to 250 kg/m^(3), whilst Part 2 is mainly concerned with materials of density above 250 kg/m^(3); - compression stress values have been deleted from Part 2; - Part 2 does not allow the use of a cylindrical test piece. This part of ISO 3386 is a general method for testing denser flexible cellular materials (i.e. expanded cellular rubbers), measurements being made on one of more points on the steeply rising part of the stress-strain curve. The shape factor of the test piece is important and comparative test results can only be obtained on test pieces having the same shape factor. NOTE 1 For comparison purposes, the method may be used for material of 150 kg/m^(3) density or greater.

1.1 This specification2 covers the types, physical properties, and dimensions of cellular polystyrene boards with or without facings or coatings made by molding (EPS) or extrusion (XPS) of expandable polystyrene. Products manufactured to this specification are intended for use as thermal insulation for temperatures from -65 to +165°F (-53.9 to +73.9°C). This specification does not apply to laminated products manufactured with any type of rigid board facer including fiberboard, perlite board, gypsum board, or oriented strand board. 1.1.1 For Type XIII only, this specification covers the physical properties, and dimensions of cellular polystyrene intended for use as thermal insulation for temperatures from −297 to +165°F (−183 to +73.9°C). 1.2 Consult the manufacturer for specific recommendations and properties in cryogenic conditions. 1.2.1 This specification does not cover cryogenic properties except for the k-factors for Type XIII in Appendix X1. For Type XIII in specific cryogenic applications, the manufacturer and purchaser shall agree upon the actual temperature limits and physical property requirements in addition to the k-factors in Appendix X1. 1.3 The use of thermal insulation materials covered by this specification may be regulated by building codes that address fire performance. For some end uses, specifiers should also address the effect of moisture and wind pressure resistance. Guidelines regarding these end use considerations are included in Appendix X1. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the tensile and tensile adhesion properties of rigid cellular materials in the form of test specimens of standard shape under defined conditions of temperature, humidity, and testing machine speed. 1.2 Tensile properties shall be measured using any of three types of specimens: 1.2.1 Type A shall be the preferred specimen in those cases where enough sample material exists to form the necessary specimen. 1.2.2 Type B shall be the preferred specimen when only smaller specimens are available, as in sandwich panels, etc. 1.2.3 Type C shall be the preferred specimen for the determination of tensile adhesive properties of a cellular plastic to a substrate as in a sandwich panel (top and bottom substrate) or the bonding strength of a cellular plastic to a single substrate. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 This test method describes a type of composite foam hardness measurement device known as durometer: Type CF. The procedure for determining indentation hardness of substances comprised of two or more elastomeric materials, one of which is a foam or foam like material. These are classified as composite foam structures. The composite foam product may have an armature made of a material suitable for adding structural integrity including but not limited to metal, plastic, or wood. This construction is typical for lapbar restraints, seating, and other restraint devices, as well as some show elements. 1.2 This test method is not equivalent to other indentation hardness methods and instrument types, specifically those described in Test Methods D1415 and D2240. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.
