This part of ISO 7498: a) provides a general description of security services and related mechanisms, which may be provided by the Reference Model; and b) defines the positions within the Reference Model where the services and mechanisms may be provided. This part of ISO 7498 extends the field of application of ISO 7498, to cover secure Communications between open systems. Basic security services and mechanisms and their appropriate piacement have been identified for all layers of the Basic Reference Model. In addition, the architectural relationships of the security services and mechanisms to the Basic Reference Model have been identified. Additional security measures may be needed in endsystems, installations and organizations. These measures apply in various application contexts. The definition of security services needed to support such additional security measures is outside the scope of this standard. OSI security functions are concerned only with those visible aspects of a communications path which permit end systems to achieve the secure transfer of information between them. OSI Security is not concerned with security measures needed in end systems, installations, and organizations, except where these have implications on the choice and position of security services visible in OSI. These latter aspects of security may be standardized but not within the scope of OSI standards. This part of ISO 7498 adds to the concepts and principles defined in ISO 7498; it does not modify them. It is not an implementation specification, nor is it a basis for appraising the conformance of actual implementations.

This International Standard specifies a) procedures for the connectionless-mode transmission of data and protocol control information from one transport entity to one peer transport entity; b) the encoding of the transport-protocol-data-units used for the transmission of data and control information; c) procedures for the correct interpretation of transport protocol control information; and d) the functional requirements for implementations claiming conformance to this International Standard. The procedures are defined in terms of a) the interactions among peer transport entities through the exchange of transport-protocol-data-units; b) the interactions between a transport entity and a transport service user through the exchange of transport service primitives; and c) the interaction between a transport entity and a net-work service provider through the exchange of network service primitives. This International Standard specifies the connectionless-mode transport protocol. The connection oriented transport protocol is specified in ISO 8073.

This part of ISO/IEC 8859 defines a set of 191 graphic characters identified as the Latin/Cyrillic alphabet, and specifies the coded representation of each of these characters by means of a single 8-bit byte. None of these characters is "non-spacing". The use of control functions, such as BACKSPACE or CARRIAGE RETURN, for the coded representation of composite characters is prohibited by this part of ISO/IEC 8859. This set of graphic characters, the Latin/Cyrillic alphabet, is in-tended for use in data and text processing applications and may also be used for information interchange. This set is suited for multiple-language applications involving the Latin and the Cyrillic scripts. It allows handling of data and text expressed in Bulgarian, Byelorussian, English, Macedonian, Russian, Serbocroatian and Ukrainian. This set of graphic characters is suitable for use in a version of an 8-bit code according to ISO 2022 or ISO 4873.

This International Standard deals with the use of the X.25 Packet Level Protocol (PLP) as specified in ISO 8208 operating over ISO 8802 Local Area Networks (LANs). Section 2 of this International Standard specifies the operation of the X.25/PLP using the Logicai Link Control (LLC) Type 2 procedures defined in ISO 8802-2. Section 3 of this International Standard specifies the operation of the X.25/PLP using the LLC Type 1 procedures defined in ISO 8802-2.

This International Standard refines the Basic Reference Model for OSI to provide a framework for co-ordinating the development of existing and future Application Layer standards. It is provided for reference by Application Layer standards. In panicular this International Standard: a) defines the nature of standards in the Application Layer and the relationships among them; b) defines the architectural framework in which individual OSI Application Layer protocols shall be developed. c) defines the categories of identifiable objects which are necessary for the specification and operation of protocols; d) relates distributed information processing activities to the standards in the Application Layer. This International Standard does not specify services and protocols for OSI. It is neither an implementation specification for systems, nor a basis for appraising the conformance of implementations. Further, it addresses neither the requirements for, nor the form of, documentation of such services and protocols.

This International Standard specifies a method of using a key and n-bit algorithms in block cipher mode to calculate an m-bit cryptographic check value that can be used as a data integrity mechanism to detect that data has not been altered in an unauthorised manner. The degree of integrity of the data is dependent on the key length and its secrecy, on the nature of the cryptographic algorithm, and on m, the length of the check value. This International Standard can be applied to the security services of any security architecture, process, or application.

This part of ISO 8859 specifies a set of 146 graphic characters identified as the Arabic/Latin alphabet and the coded represen-tation of each of these characters by means of a single 8-bit byte. The implementation of this part of ISO 8859 will require the use of specific control functions due to the fact that languages using the Latin script are written from left to right and Arabic is written from right to left. In addition, statements expressed with one of the scripts may have to be included in text using the other script. Also the insertion of numerical values may require special treatment. The specification of the control functions to be used with the set of graphic characters contained herein is outside the scope of this part of ISO 8859.

1 This International Standard defines (in an abstract way) the externally visible service provided by the OSI Pres-entation Layer in terms of a) the primitive actions and events at the user/service boundary; b) the parameter data associated with each primitive ac-tion and event; c) the relationship between, and the valid sequences of, those actions and events. 2 The service defmed in this International Standard is that which is provided by an OSI presentation protocol (in conjunction with the OSI session-service) and which may be used by any OSI application protocol. 3 This International Standard does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the im-plementation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. There is, therefore, no conformance to this International Standard.

This International Standard specifies elements of data link control procedures for synchronous, code-transparent data transmission using the HDLC frame structure specified in ISO 3309 and independent frame numbering in both directions. These HDLC elements of procedures are defined specifically in terms of the actions that occur on receipt of commands at a secondary station or a combined station. This International Standard is intended to cover a wide range of applications; for example one-way, two-way alternate or two-way simultaneous data communication between data stations which are usually buffered, including operations on different types of data circuits; for example multipoint/point-to-point, duplex/half-duplex, switched/non-switched, etc. The defined HDLC elements of procedures are to be considered as a common basis for establishing different types of control procedures. This International Standard does not define any single system and should not be regarded as a specification for a data communication system. Not all of the commands or responses are required for a particular system implementation.

This International Standard defines in an abstract way the externally visible service provided by the OSI Transport Layer in terms of a) the primitive actions and events of the service; b) the parameter data associated with each primitive action and event; c) the relationship between, and the valid sequences of the actions and events. The service defined in this International Standard is that which is provided by all OSI Transport Protocols (in conjunction with the Network Service) and which may be used by any OSI Session Protocol. This International Standard does not specify individual implementations or products, nor does it constrain the implemen-tation of entities and interfaces within a computer system. There is, therefore no conformance to this International Standard.
