1.1 This test method determines the operating forces for opening and closing horizontal and vertical sliding windows and horizontal sliding door systems. It does not address the forces required for opening pivoting, projecting, or other fenestration systems. This test method does not address the use or performance of add-on devices or mechanical operators that might be installed to reduce operating forces of sliding windows or doors. It deals only with the forces necessary to open and close a sash or panel through the direct application of force to the operable sash or panel. 1.2 This test method is suitable for laboratory product comparisons or for qualifying products, or both, as meeting window or door operating force specifications. This test method is also suitable for use in the field to determine the operating forces required to open and close installed sliding windows and doors. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1.1 This test method provides a standard laboratory procedure for determining the air leakage rates of exterior windows, curtain walls, and doors under specified differential air temperature and pressure conditions across the specimen. 1.2 Specified temperature and pressure conditions are representative of those that may be encountered at the exterior thermal envelope of buildings, excluding the effects of heat buildup due to solar radiation. 1.3 This laboratory procedure is applicable to exterior windows, curtain walls, and doors and is intended to measure only such leakage associated with the assembly and not the installation; however, the test method can be adapted for the latter purpose. 1.4 This is a laboratory procedure for testing at differential temperature conditions. Persons interested in a laboratory test at ambient conditions should reference Test Method E283. Persons interested in a field test on installed windows and doors should reference Test Method E783. 1.5 Persons using this procedure should be knowledgeable in the areas of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and instrumentation practices, and shall have a general understanding of fenestration products and components. 1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1 Scope 1.1 General This Standard applies to a) fenestration systems covered by AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, including i) vertically sliding windows; ii) horizontally sliding windows; iii) dual-action windows; iv) casement windows, both fixed and operable; v) projecting (awning/hopper) windows; vi) fixed windows; vii) sidelites; viii) transom windows; ix) sliding doors; x) side-hinged doors; xi) dual-action side-hinged doors; xii) architectural terrace doors; xiii) unit skylights and roof windows; xiv) greenhouse or garden windows; and xv) tubular daylighting devices; b) curtain walls, window walls, and storefront; and c) garage (vehicular access/rolling) doors. Note: Unless otherwise specified, the term “fenestration system” is used to apply to all products listed in Clause 1.1. 1.2 Application This Standard specifies both measurement and computer simulation methods for establishing the following fenestration system properties for both residential and commercial applications: a) overall coefficient of heat transfer (U-factor); b) solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC); c) visible transmittance (VT); and d) Temperature Index (I) and Condensation Index (CI). Note: The fenestration properties established in accordance with this Standard are for specific indoor and outdoor conditions and will vary slightly under actual conditions. The values obtained by the methods specified in this Standard are considered to provide an acceptable basis for comparing performance in use. 1.3 Energy Rating (ER) 1.3.1 This Standard specifies a method for determining an energy performance rating for vertical fenestration systems, under heating conditions, for use in low-rise residential applications. The Energy Rating (ER) includes factors for a) solar heat gain; b) heat loss by conduction, radiation, and convection; and c) heat loss by air leakage. 1.3.2 The ER allows for a comparison of different fenestration systems on the basis of their effect on the energy supplied annually by the heating system. The ER calculation assumes vertical installation in low-rise residential buildings and is based on average conditions for a) incident solar radiation on fenestration systems facing the four cardinal compass directions (north, east, south, and west); and b) representative climate zones in Canada. 1.3.3 The ER should not be used to rate a) any sloped glazing (residential or commercial); or b) fenestration products that will be installed in commercial, industrial, or high-rise residential buildings. 1.4 A440.3 general information CSA A440.3 is a user guide to this Standard. It provides guidance on determining a) a specific Energy Rating (ERS) for particular locations, orientations, and vertical fenestration system sizes; and b) an ER for residential cooling (ERC). 1.5 Annex B general information Annex B introduces the issue of climate change and its associated effects on fenestration in buildings. It is anticipated that fenestration designers will need to incorporate changes in climate loads resulting from climate change into fenestration product design. It is also anticipated that adjustments will need to be made to installation detailing. Annex B provides some information on these topics for consideration by building design professionals, authorities having jurisdiction, and installers. As information on climate change evolves, so too will the requirements of this Standard. 1.6 Exceptions This Standard does not apply to a) fixed glazing cast into precast concrete panels; b) revolving doors; c) doors intended for indoor use; d) storm doors; and e) glazed architectural structures. Note: While these products have not been considered in the development of this Standard, simulation procedures given in the Standard may be used to evaluate the U-factor and the SHGC of these products. This Standard does not address the retention of thermal and optical properties and airtightness by fenestration systems over time and under conditions of use. 1.7 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Legends to equations and figures are considered requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.1 This test method is a modified version of Test Method E283/E283M, and provides a standard laboratory procedure for determining air leakage separately through the face and sides of exterior windows, curtain walls, and doors under specified differential pressure conditions across the specimen. The test method described is for tests with constant temperature and humidity across the specimen. NOTE 1—Detailing buildings with continuous air barriers requires that the air barrier plane in a window system be clearly defined. When special circumstances dictate that the air barrier be sealed to the window frame at a location other than that used to seal the specimen to the test chamber in this test method, additional laboratory testing may be required to clarify potential paths of air flow through the sides of the window frame. The adapted testing procedure described herein is intended for this purpose. 1.2 This laboratory procedure is applicable to exterior windows, curtain walls, and doors and is intended to measure only such leakage associated with the assembly and not the installation. The test method can be adapted for the latter purpose. NOTE 2—Performing tests at non-ambient conditions or with a temperature differential across the specimen may affect the air leakage rate. This is not addressed by this test method. 1.3 This test method is intended for laboratory use. Persons interested in performing field air leakage tests on installed units should reference Test Method E783. Test Method E783 will not provide the user with a means of determining air flow through the sides of tested specimens. 1.4 Persons using this procedure should be knowledgeable in the areas of fluid mechanics, instrumentation practices, and shall have a general understanding of fenestration products and components. 1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.
