This European Standard specifies the requirements and tests for the construction, performance, safety and conformity of gas-volume electronic conversion devices associated to gas meters, used to measure volumes of fuel gases of the 1st and 2nd families according to EN 437. This European Standard is intended for type testing, the detailed relevant provisions of which are given in Annex A. Only three kinds of conversion are treated in this European Standard: conversion as a function of temperature only (called T conversion); conversion as a function of the pressure and of the temperature with constant compression factor (called PT conversion); conversion as a function of the pressure, the temperature and taking into account the compression factor (called PTZ conversion). This document is not relevant to temperature conversion integrated into gas meters which only indicate the converted volume. EN 12405-2 for energy conversion is in preparation. Gas-volume conversion devices consist of a calculator and a temperature transducer or a calculator, a temperature transducer and a pressure transducer locally installed. For application of this European Standard, a conversion device may be, as a choice of the manufacturer, considered as a complete instrument (Type 1) or made of separate elements (Type 2), according to the definitions given in 3.8.1 and 3.8.2. In this last case, the provisions concerning pressure transducers, temperature sensors and temperature transducers are given in Annexes B, C and D respectively. Any conversion device can provide an error curve correction for a gas meter. NOTE When rendering an account to an end user the readings from the conversion device can be used in conjunction with the readings from a gas meter conforming to EN 1359, EN 12480, or EN 12261, as appropriate, or to any other appropriate and relevant international or national standard for gas meters, without prejudice of national regulations.

This Technical Report outlines recommendations for "smart gas meters", specifies recommendations where there is clear consensus, and identifies areas where there are barriers to standardisation. It indicates how functions may be implemented in a harmonized way if they are selected. It does not seek to select which functions are to be implemented in a smart meter. The report covers simple to complex implementations of smart metering. This Technical Report is applicable to 1st, 2nd and 3rd family gases according to EN 437.

This document (CEN/TR 1749:2009) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC SFG_U “Sector Forum Gas Utilisation”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. This document supersedes CEN/TR 1749:2005. This technical report has been prepared under the aegis of the Sector Forum Gas Utilisation committee to provide guidance to CEN Technical Committees who are preparing European Standards for appliances burning combustible gases. It gives details of a general scheme for the classification of such appliances according to the method of evacuating the products of combustion. It must be stressed that this scheme only concerns gas appliances that are intended to be installed within buildings. It does not apply to outdoor appliances. Nevertheless, it is recognised that this appliance classification scheme could be utilised in other circumstances. For example, in the case of : a) Appliances capable of utilising heating oil or kerosene, and b) Gas appliances intended for installation in a partially protected location external to a building. This form of appliance classification is widely used in the preparation of European Standards for gas appliances to identify the requirements and methods of test that are applicable to the various methods of evacuating the products of combustion. Appliances classified in this way are generally described as “types” and this description has been retained for the purposes of this general scheme. The main purpose of the scheme is to promote harmonization in the classification of appliance types. This should ensure that there is a clear understanding of the various appliance types and will avoid confusion arising from Technical Committees describing them in different ways. CEN Technical committees are therefore requested to use this scheme in all circumstances in which it is appropriate. They should not deviate from it unless there are sound technical reasons for so doing. In the preparation of this scheme it was noted that there were methods of evacuating products of combustion that were particular to a specific Technical Committee or to a particular gas appliance. These particular methods have not been included in the present scheme because, as indicated above, the main purpose of the scheme is to promote harmonization across Technical Committees. However, it is intended that this scheme should be reviewed from time to time in order to consider its extension to other, possibly new, methods of evacuating products of combustion. At that time, such specific methods of evacuating products of combustion may be included at the request of the Technical Committees concerned.

This British Standard specifies requirements for gas meter boxes for use with single gas meter installations conforming to BS 6400, which: a) are supplied with gases of the 2nd and 3rd family, with a maximum capacity of 6 m3/h and a maximum operating pressure not exceeding 2 bar; and b) incorporate any of the following meters: diaphragm, ultrasonic, credit or prepayment. It does not apply to multiple meter installations which are installed in the same housing. It covers the following designs of meter box, including any associated box extensions: 1) built-in; 2) surface mounted; 3) semi-concealed; 4) universal. It does not cover security shrouds intended to provide additional protection to meter installations. This British Standard also specifies requirements for the design of the standard meter bracket.

This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for the construction, safety, classification and marking of non-domestic gas-fired overhead radiant tube systems incorporating two or more burner units with each burner under the control of an automatic burner control system, and operated by a single fan providing a single flue outlet, called system H and referred to in the body of the text as the “system”. This standard is applicable to Type B52 systems (see 4.3) intended for use in other than domestic dwellings, in which the supply of combustion air and the evacuation of the products of combustion is achieved by mechanical means. This standard is applicable only to such systems that have fully premixed gas/air burners. This standard is not applicable to: a) systems designed for use in domestic dwellings; b) outdoor systems; c) systems of heat input in excess of 120 kW (based on the net calorific value of the appropriate reference test gas); d) systems having a draught diverter; e) systems that are designed for continuous condensation within the flue system under normal operating conditions; f) systems having combustion products evacuation ducts that are non-metallic. This standard is applicable to systems which are intended to be type tested. It also includes requirements concerning the evaluation of conformity, including factory production control, but these requirements only apply to POCEDs and their associated terminals. NOTE Requirements for systems which are not intended to be type tested would need to be subject to further consideration. Requirements concerning the rational use of energy have not been included in this European Standard.
