It therefore includes air heaters designed to provide make-up air, door curtain heaters, spray booth heaters, portable air heaters and direct fired air heaters capable of providing full space heating. This standard specifies the requirements for direct gas fired forced convection air heaters designed for permanent outdoor installation. It also specifies the requirements for transportable direct gas fired forced convection air heaters. This standard applies to appliances designed to operate on normal low pressure district supplies of 2nd family gas. For appliances fitted with gas boosters, additional requirements may apply.

This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for the rational use of energy of non-domestic gas fired overhead radiant tube heaters incorporating a single burner system under the control of an automatic burner control system, referred to in the body of the text as 'appliances'. This standard is applicable to Type A2, A3, B12, B13, B22, B23, B42, B43, B52, B53, C12, C13, C32 and C33 appliances intended for use in other than domestic dwellings, in which the supply of combustion air and/or the evacuation of the products of combustion is achieved by mechanical means located upstream of the draught diverter, if provided. This standard is not applicable to: a) appliances designed for use in a domestic dwelling; b) outdoor appliances; c) appliances of heat input in excess of 120 kW (based on the net calorific value of the appropriate reference test gas); d) appliances having fully pre-mixed gas and air burners in which : 1) either the gas and all the combustion air are brought together just before the level of the combustion zone; or 2) pre-mixing of the gas and all combustion air is carried out in a part of the burner upstream of the combustion zone. This standard is applicable to appliances which are intended to be type tested. Requirements for appliances which are not intended to be type tested need to be subject to further consideration.

This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for the construction, safety, and marking of decorative fuel effect gas appliances not exceeding a nominal heat input of 20 kW, (based on the net calorific value), thereafter referred to as appliances. This standard is applicable to appliances that are designed to simulate a solid fuel fire and incorporate a natural draught burner with or without an ignition burner. The appliances are for decorative purposes only and are not heating appliances. This standard includes additional requirements for Type Bbs appliances which are specified in Annex J.

This European Standard (EN 1266:2002/A1:2004) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 62 "Independent gas-fired space heaters", the secretariat of which is held by BSI. This Amendment to the European Standard EN 1266:2002 shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by February 2006, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by February 2006. This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s). This European standard specifies the design, safety and marking requirements and test methods for flueless patio heaters for outdoor or amply ventilated area use only. Although they are not covered by this standard, the requirements of this standard are applicable to appliances that may be used inside habitations which, in addition, shall have a heat input not exceeding 4,2 kW and comply with EN 449. These appliances are for use exclusively with gases of the third family as defined in Clause 4. This European standard applies to appliances that have a nominal heat input not exceeding 17 kW (based on the gross calorific value); -- fixed or, -- movable, including those which comprise a housing for a transportable and rechargeable liquefied petroleum gas cylinder. This European standard does not apply to appliances equipped with a fan for either combustion or circulation of the convection air. This European standard does not cover LPG containers for liquefied petroleum gas, neither their associated regulator nor tubing and flexible hoses which shall comply with national requirements in force. This European standard does not lay down any specific requirements for the thermal efficiency of this type of appliances, but the requirements relating to combustion, which is a safety matter, ensure that the gas fuel will burn efficiently. However a method to measure the performance is described in informative Annex C. This standard does not apply to appliances covered by EN 416-1, EN 419-1, EN 449, EN 461 and EN 521. This European standard only covers type testing. Items relating to quality assurance systems, production testing and particularly certificates of conformity of auxiliary equipment are not covered by this European standard.

This British Standard specifies the installation requirements for direct and indirect gas-fired forced convection air heaters for space heating that are designed for commercial or industrial applications and to which the Gas Appliances (Safety) Regulations 1995 [1] apply. This standard applies to the installation of appliances that are designed to utilize gases of Group H of the second family (e.g. natural gas), gases of group P of the third family (e.g. propane) as well as gases of group B of the third family (e.g. butane) when supplied under the conditions of the third family pressure couple (see BS EN 437:2003). NOTE 1 This standard does not specifically cover LPG/air for which additional requirements might be necessary. This standard applies to the installation of direct gas-fired air heaters within the scope of BS EN 525:1998 and to indirect gas-fired forced convection air heaters within the scope of BS EN 621:1998, BS EN 1020:1998 and, where appropriate, BS EN 1196:1998. These standards cover air heaters having a net heat input not exceeding 300 kW. This standard also applies to the installation of direct gas-fired air heaters within the scope of BS 5990:1990 and to indirect gas-fired forced convection air heaters within the scope of BS 5991:1989. These standards cover air heaters having a gross heat input greater than 330 kW but not exceeding 2 MW (1.8 MW net). NOTE 2 For the purposes of this standard, installation includes design, inspection and commissioning. It is recognized that each of the tasks can be performed at the same time by different persons. NOTE 3 The ratio of gross to net heat input is approximately 1.11:1 for Group H (natural gas), 1.09:1 for group P (propane) and 1.08:1 for group B (butane). NOTE 4 The ventilation rates in cm2/kW of heat input given in this standard are based on the net calorific value. This standard also applies to air heaters designed to supply make-up air, door curtain heaters and transportable air heaters. It also covers installation of heaters in areas where petroleum or other flammable heavier-than-air vapours can be present (see 5.1.2). It does not include the safety requirements for installation where flammable dusts, toxic gases or flammable lighter-than-air gases might be present in significant quantities. NOTE 5 In such cases it is essential that liaison takes place with the Health and Safety Executive. This standard does not apply to the installation of air heaters to which the Gas Appliances (Safety) Regulations 1995 [1] do not apply, or that are designed for use in domestic premises.

This part of BS 5871 specifies installation and maintenance requirements for open flued decorative fuel effect gas appliances of heat input not exceeding 20 kW (see Note 2) burning 2nd and 3rd family gases in rooms or internal spaces in domestic (see Note 4) or commercial premises, including public houses and restaurants. The provisions contained within this standard cover the selection of a suitable appliance, the ventilation and flueing requirements, and other measures necessary to ensure a safe installation. This standard applies to the installation of decorative fuel effect gas appliances in builder's openings, fireplace recesses, flue boxes or under associated independent canopies. (See Figure 5.) It does not cover the installation of flueless or room-sealed appliances. This standard is not applicable to mobile and portable appliances in conformity with BS EN 449 or to appliances in touring caravans. NOTE 1 Attention is drawn to the foreword concerning fuel effect appliances which burn gas for a decorative effect. The only types of such appliance covered by this part of BS 5871 are those detailed in b) of the commentary and recommendations on Clause 5 of this standard. Further guidance in this respect is given in Figure 1. NOTE 2 Heat inputs in this document are based on net calorific value. Figures based on gross calorific value are given in parenthesis where deemed necessary. This part of BS 5871 specifies installation and maintenance requirements for inset live fuel effect gas fires of heat input not exceeding 15 kW (16.6 kW based on gross calorific value) burning 2nd and 3rd family gases for the purpose of heating rooms or spaces in domestic (see Note 5) or commercial premises. Combined appliances of the type where a fire is used in conjunction with a boiler or circulator are also covered in so far as the installation of the combined appliance is concerned. The standard is applicable to appliances intended for installation either: a) within a builder's opening and/or fireplace recess and which may, additionally, be suitable for installation in a purpose designed metal flue box conforming to BS 715 and flue conforming to the constructional and temperature requirements of BS EN 1856-1 and BS EN 1856-2; or b) using a direct flue connection, if specified in the manufacturer's instructions; or c) in the case of a room sealed appliance, using a flue terminal/air duct assembly supplied by the appliance manufacturer. This standard covers the selection of a suitable appliance, the ventilation and flueing requirements, and other measures necessary to ensure a safe installation. The central heating and/or hot water system connected to a combined appliance is not within the scope of this standard and reference should be made to BS 5449 (see Note 6) and BS 5546 for this part of such an installation. This standard is not applicable to mobile and portable appliances conforming to BS EN 449 or to appliances in touring caravans. Additional requirements for the installation of fire/back boilers and fire/back circulators are specified in Clauses 15, 16, 17 and 18. NOTE 1 Inset live fuel effect gas fires differ from decorative fuel effect gas appliances, which burn gas so as to simulate a solid fuel fire or produce other decorative effects, in that they incorporate a heat exchanger and restrict the passage of the products of combustion between the appliance firebed and the chimney or flue. The only decorative fuel effect gas appliances covered by this part of BS 5871 are those shown in Figure lb) and detailed in 1d) of the commentary and recommendations on Clause 5 of this standard. NOTE 2 Unless the context requires otherwise, inset live fuel effect gas fires are hereinafter referred to as fires. NOTE 3 Heat inputs in this document are based on net calorific value. Figures based on gross calorific value are given in parenthesis where deemed necessary. See also Clause 5, commentary and recommendations g). NOTE 4 Attention is drawn to the foreword concerning the installation of used appliances.
