This standard applies to short wave broadcast transmitters and installations operating in the frequency range 3 MHz to 30 MHz. The objective of the standard is to specify, for such a frequency band, basic information allowing the definition of a method for assessment of compliance related to human exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields.

The scope of this product-family standard is limited to apparatus, systems and fixed installations which are intended for use in the railway environment. The frequency range covered is 0 Hz to 300 GHz. Technical considerations and measurements are necessary for frequencies up to 20 kHz because no relevant field strengths are expected above due to the physical nature of EMF-sources in the railway environment. The object of this standard is to provide measurement and calculation procedures of electric and magnetic field levels generated by electronic and electrical apparatus in the railway environment with respect to human exposure. The regulations regarding the protection of human being during exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic fields in the railway environment are different within the countries of European Community. This standard offers a procedure regarding measurement, simulation and evaluation. At present two European documents regarding EMF have to be considered: a) Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC of 12 July 1999 (see Bibliography); b) Directive 2004/40/EC (see Bibliography). The measurement procedures and points of measurement cover also the aspect of persons bearing active implantable medical devices. NOTE 1 Not covered is the risk assessment for persons bearing active implants in magnetic field generated by electronic and electrical apparatus in the railway environment. Not covered are personal electronic devices (e.g. mobile phones, notebooks, wireless communication systems etc.) of passengers and workers. Not covered are intentional transmitters with frequencies higher than 20 kHz. NOTE 2 These apparatus (with a working frequency of 9 kHz or higher) are covered by R&TTE Directive and have to comply also with LVD (Low Voltage Directive). In this view these apparatus have also limitation of EM fields or a “safety-distance” for these apparatus must be given.

This European Standard specifies procedures for the measurement or estimation and the assessment of personal exposures to ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun. NOTE 1 According to CIE 17.4 UV-radiation is defined as an electromagnetic radiation with wavelength between 100 nm and 400 nm. Due to atmospheric absorption only solar UV-radiation in the spectral region between 280 nm and 400 nm reaches the earth's surface in significant amounts. This European Standard applies to solar UV-exposures when staying outdoors. This European Standard is applicable to workers and to the general population. This European Standard does not apply to UV-exposures caused by artificial sources, e.g. UV-lamps, welding arcs. NOTE 2 Part I of this European Standard deals with UV-exposures caused by artificial sources. NOTE 3 For radiation emissions of products other standards apply, such as CIE S 009 for lamps and lamp systems, EN 60335-2-27 [6] for sunbeds, EN 60335-2-59 [7] for insect killers and EN 12198 [8] for radiation emissions of machinery. This European Standard does not apply to radiation exposures which concern the retina of the eyes. NOTE 4 Ultraviolet and visible radiation exposures of the eyes may result in photochemical damage to the retina (this is often called the blue light hazard). The associated action spectrum contains mainly visible radiation and only a very small contribution in the ultraviolet region. The determination and assessment of radiation which may result in a blue light hazard may be done in accordance with part 2 of EN 14255 [20].

This part of IEC 62226 applies to the frequency range for which exposure limits are based on the induction of voltages or currents in the human body when exposed to electric fields. This part defines in detail the coupling factor K – introduced by the IEC 62226 series to enable exposure assessment for complex exposure situations, such as non-uniform magnetic field or perturbed electric field – for the case of simple models of the human body, exposed to uniform electric fields. The coupling factor K has different physical interpretations depending on whether it relates to electric or magnetic field exposure. It is the so called “shape factor for electric field”. This part of IEC 62226 can be used when the electric field can be considered to be uniform, for frequencies up to at least 100 kHz. This situation of exposure to a “uniform” electric field is mostly found in the vicinity of high voltage overhead power systems. For this reason, illustrations given in this part are given for power frequencies (50 Hz and 60 Hz).

This standard specifies the terminology and the quantities that are used in UV-, VIS- and IR-exposure measurements according to parts 1, 2 and 3 of EN 14255. NOTE Parts 1 and 2 were published in 2005, while part 3 is under preparation. This standard can also be applied to the terminology and quantities used in international recommendations from, e.g. ICNIRP, CIE, etc. The purpose of this standard is to unify the definitions of quantities for optical radiation measurements since inconsistencies occur between existing publications from different origins.
