This British Standard specifies requirements and test methods for coveralls, which are to be used predominantly but not exclusively by police and prison officers in specialist operational situations and in training, and which are intended to provide protection against heat and flame and small volumes of certain liquids. It is applicable to single and two-piece garments, single-layer garments, multi-layer garments and garment assemblies requiring use of a specific undergarment. This British Standard does not cover other protective features such as electrostatic, cut or slash resistance. NOTE Civilian groups working alongside police or prison services in specialist operational situations might find by risk assessment that this standard offers additional protection for such activities and threats not considered by other standards.

5.1 This test method is designed to provide a standardized procedure to ensure comparable results between manufacturers, testing laboratories, and users. 5.2 This test method attempts to realistically quantify the radiation protection provided by radiation protective garments under real world conditions for workers primarily exposed to scattered radiation in medical fluoroscopy work. 5.3 This test method is designed to simulate exposure conditions to radiation scattered from the body of the patient undergoing fluoroscopy through an angle of 90° from the primary X-ray beam. 5.4 The test method is designed to include contributions of radiation dose to the wearer from secondary radiation emitted from the shielding material. 1.1 This test method establishes a procedure for measuring the relative reduction in the intensity of X-radiation provided by shielding garments to the human user under conditions simulating actual use. 1.2 This test method provides a condition simulating X-rays generated between 60 and 130 kV that are scattered through an angle of 90° by a water equivalent material. 1.3 This test method applies to both leaded and no-leaded radiation protective materials. 1.4 This test method provides a method for inclusion of secondary radiations generated within the protective material into a more realistic evaluation of radiation protection. 1.5 The values given in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 5.1 Workers involved in the production, use, and transportation of liquid and gaseous chemicals can be exposed to numerous compounds capable of causing harm upon contact with the human body. The deleterious effects of these chemicals can range from acute trauma such as skin irritation and burn to chronic degenerative disease such as cancer. Since engineering controls may not eliminate all possible exposures, attention is often placed on reducing the potential for direct skin contact through the use of protective clothing that resists permeation, penetration, and degradation. 5.2 This test method is only appropriate for evaluating the integrity of totally encapsulating protective suits, that are designed and manufactured to prevent the inward leakage of gases and vapors. The vapor protection should be tested in accordance with Test Method F2588. Garments designed to protect from liquid chemicals should be tested in accordance with Test Method F1359. 5.3 This non-destructive test method is useful as a quality control tool for manufactures and as a field method for end users to determine changes in garment integrity following use. 5.4 This test method is useful to end users for determining the integrity of vapor protective suits upon receipt from the manufacturer, prior to use, following use and decontamination, following repairs, and as a periodic maintenance test. 1.1 This test method measures the ability of a vapor protective suits, including seams, and closures to maintain a fixed, positive pressure. 1.2 This test method does not measure vapor protection of suits. This test method measures the integrity of the suit, glove, foot protection, and visor materials, as well as the seams, and closures of a vapor protective suit. Exhaust valves fitted in the vapor protective suit must be sealed or blocked for this test and therefore are not functionally tested. 1.3 The values as stated in in.-H2O (mm-H2O) units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 5.1 This test method assesses the cut resistance of a material when exposed to a cutting edge under specified loads. Data obtained from this test method can be used to compare the cut resistance of different materials. 5.2 This test method only addresses that range of cutting hazards that are related to a cutting action across the surface of the material. It is not representative of any other cutting hazard to which the material may be subjected such as serrated edges, saw blades or motorized cutting tools. Nor is it representative of puncture, tear, or other modes of fabric failure. 1.1 This test method covers the measurement of the cut resistance of a material when mounted on a mandrel and subjected to a cutting edge under a specified load using the Cut Protection Performance (CPP) Tester. 1.1.1 This procedure is not valid for high-porosity materials which allow cutting edge contact with the mounting surface prior to cutting. 1.1.2 Test apparatus may have limitations in testing materials with a thickness greater than 3 mm or having a high frictional coefficient such as elastomers. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other.
