This Part of EN 1366 specifies a method of test and criteria for the evaluation (including field of application rules) of the ability of a penetration seal to maintain the fire resistance of a separating element at the position at which it has been penetrated by a service. Penetration seals used to seal gaps around chimneys, air ventilation systems, fire rated ventilation ducts, fire rated service ducts, shafts and smoke extraction ducts are excluded from this standard except for mixed penetration seals. The fire resistance of those services itself cannot be assessed with the methods described in this standard. Supporting constructions are used in this standard to represent separating elements such as walls or floors. These simulate the interaction between the test specimen and the separating element into which the sealing system is to be installed in practice. This European Standard is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1. The purpose of this test described in this standard is to assess: a) the effect of such penetrations on the integrity and insulation performance of the separating element concerned; b) the integrity and insulation performance of the penetration seal; c) the insulation performance of the penetrating service or services, and where necessary, the integrity failure of a service. No information can be implied by the test concerning the influence of the inclusion of such penetrations and sealing systems on the Ioadbearing capacity of the separating element. It is not the intention of this test to provide quantitative information on the rate of leakage of smoke and/or hot gases or on the transmission or generation of fumes. Such phenomena are only to be noted in describing the general behaviour of test specimens during the test. This test is not intended to supply any information on the ability of the penetration seal to withstand stress caused by movements or displacements of the penetrating services. The risk of spread of fire downwards caused by burning material, which drips through a pipe downwards to floors below, cannot be assessed with this test. Explanatory notes to this test method are given in Annex H. All dimensions given without tolerances are nominal ones unless otherwise stated.

This part of IEC 60695 provides guidance for assessing and choosing candidate materials, components or sub-assemblies for making an end-product based upon preselection testing. It describes how preselection provides comparative fire hazard test methods to evaluate the performance of a test specimen and how preselection can be used in the selection of materials, parts, components and sub-assemblies during the design stage of an end-product. It further describes how standardized test methods may be used as one part in the decision making processes directed to minimize the fire hazards from electrotechnical equipment. It states that one should take into account the desired reaction to fire properties of the endproduct, and that one should consider the possible effects of environmental conditions on the behaviour of the end-product. This basic safety publication is intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of basic safety publications in the preparation of its publications. The requirements, test methods or test conditions of this basic safety publication will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.

This part of EN 1366 specifies a test method for determining the fire resistance of smoke extraction ducts that are used for single compartment applications only. In such applications, the smoke extraction system is only intended to function up to flashover (typically 600 °C). This method of test is only suitable for ducts constructed from non-combustible materials (euro class A1 and A2-s1, d0). It is applicable only to four sided and circular ducts. One, two and three sided ducts are not covered. This test has been designed to cover horizontal smoke extraction ducts intended for single compartment applications only. This test method of part 9 is applicable only to smoke extraction ducts that do not pass through into other fire compartments. It represents fire exposure of a developing fire (pre-flashover). For smoke extraction ducts that pass through into other compartments, the method of test described in EN 1366- 8 should be used. The smoke extraction duct is part of the smoke extraction system which also includes smoke control dampers and smoke extract fans. The method described in this test standard is complex and requires sophisticated instrumentation. It is not recommended therefore to try to test multiple assemblies in this test.

Test Methods E 119 and E 1529, and other standard fire resistance test methods specify that throughout exposures to fire and the hose stream, a constant superimposed axial load be applied to a load-bearing test specimen to simulate a maximum load condition. They specify that this superimposed load shall be as nearly as practicable the maximum load allowed by design under nationally recognized structural design criteria. For this practice, the nationally recognized structural design criteria is the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS). Alternatively, the standard fire resistance test methods shall be conducted by applying an axial load that is less than the maximum allowable axial load as addressed by the NDS and this practice, but these tests shall be identified in the test report as being conducted under restricted load conditions. The superimposed axial load, as well as the superimposed axial load as a percentage of the maximum allowable axial design load as addressed by the NDS and this practice shall be included in the test report. This practice describes procedures for calculating the superimposed axial load to be applied in standard fire resistance tests of wood-frame wall assemblies. Statements in either the fire resistance test method standard or the nationally recognized structural design standard supercede any procedures described by this practice. The NDS shall be consulted to ensure calculations are in compliance with all applicable provisions of that document.1.1 This practice covers procedures for calculating the superimposed axial load required to be applied to load-bearing wood-frame walls throughout standard fire-resistance and fire and hose-stream tests. 1.2 The calculations determine the maximum load allowed by design for wood-frame wall assemblies under nationally recognized structural design criteria. 1.3 This practice is only applicable to those wood-frame assemblies for which the nationally recognized structural design criteria is the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS). 1.4 The system of units to be used is that of the nationally recognized structural design criteria. For the NDS, the units are inch-pound. 1.5 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
