In filling electrical apparatus, it is desirable to use low gas content transformer oil in order to prevent foaming and to avoid air pockets that might result in gaseous ionization. This procedure provides a simple method to measure the gas content of the oil, and may be used as a factory-control test and as a control or functional test in installation and maintenance work by utilities.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the gas content of electrical insulating oils of low and medium viscosities in the general range of 100 SUS and below at 100°F (37.8°C), and is suitable for field or laboratory use. Note 18212;For testing insulating oils with viscosities above 100 SUS, see Test Method D 831. For individual gas concentrations, see Method D 3612. 1.2 Warning—Mercury has been designated by EPA and many state agencies as a hazardous material that can cause central nervous system, kidney, and liver damage. Mercury, or its vapor, may be hazardous to health and corrosive to materials. Caution should be taken when handling mercury and mercury-containing products. See the applicable product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for details and EPA’s website (http://www.epa.gov/mercury/faq.htm) for additional information. Users should be aware that selling mercury or mercury-containing products, or both, in your state may be prohibited by state law. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This test method covers the determination of copper in new or used electrical insulating oil of petroleum origin by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. 1.2 The lowest limit of detectability is primarily dependent upon the method of atomization, but also upon the energy source, the fuel and oxidant, and the degree of electrical expansion of the output signal. The lowest detectable concentration is usually considered to be equal to twice the maximum variation of the background. For flame atomization, the lower limit of detectability is generally in the order of 0.1 ppm. For non-flame atomization, the lower limit of detectability is less than 0.01 ppm. 1.3 The values stated in acceptable metric units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. See 5.4 for specific precautionary statements.

1.1 This specification covers new mineral insulating oil of petroleum origin for use as an insulating and cooling medium in new and existing power and distribution electrical apparatus, such as, transformers, regulators, reactors, circuit breakers, switchgear, and attendant equipment. 1.2 This specification is intended to define a mineral insulating oil that is functionally interchangeable and miscible with existing oils, is compatible with existing apparatus and with appropriate field maintenance, and will satisfactorily maintain its functional characteristics in its application in electrical equipment. This specification applies only to new insulating oil as received prior to any processing.

For any given ceramic composition, one or more of the properties covered herein may be of more importance for a given insulating application than the other properties. Thus, it may be appropriate that selected properties be specified for testing these ceramic materials. Pertinent statements of the significance of individual properties may be found in the sections pertaining to such properties.1.1 These test methods outline procedures for testing samples of vitrified ceramic materials that are to be used as electrical insulation. Where specified limits are mentioned herein, they shall not be interpreted as specification limits for completed insulators.

The silver strip test established by this standard is used for the determination of corrosive sulphur in electrical insulating oils according to DIN VDE 0370 part 1 and part 2. For the testing a silver strip is immersed for 18 h at a temperature of 100 ?in a sample of the insulating oil to be tested. The discolouring of the surface of the silver strip is an indicating for the amount of sulphur in the oil.
