This part of ISO 8178, together with ISO 8178-1 and ISO 8178-11, specifies the measurement and evaluation methods for gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from reciprocating internal combustion engines (RIC engines) under steady-state and transient conditions for field testing. This part of ISO 8178 is applied when RIC engines used in off-road vehicles, marine installations, generating sets, diesel rail traction or similar applications need to be measured under field conditions or at site in order to determine the in-use compliance, or when it is not possible to take the measurements under test-bed conditions or to use the test-bed measurement results. Re-checking or re-certification of engines for off-road vehicles after rebuild should preferably be tested outside the vehicle on a suitable load application and measurement device such as a dynamometer or load bank, but in-use compliance testing may be done on the vehicle. This method can be used for determining conformity or certification of new, used or rebuilt engines at site or for in-use compliance testing of off-road vehicles. Confirmation of test-bed results with respect to ISO 8178-4 can also be performed within this part of ISO 8178. However, allowances need to be made for differences in engine operating parameters from laboratory conditions and for the accuracy of emission measurement equipment used under field conditions. For engines used in machinery covered by additional requirements (e.g. occupational health and safety regulations, regulations for powerplants), additional test conditions and special evaluation methods may apply. NOTE This part of ISO 8178 is intended to specify special requirements for the measurement of gaseous and particulate emissions at site or under field operating conditions. In many cases, the test cycles specified in ISO 8178-4 and ISO 8178-11 cannot be reproduced at site due to constraints of load. For in-use compliance testing, actual in-use operation might be required.

1.1 - The purpose of these international regulations is to define type approval tests for new types of diesel engines intended for installation in railway motive power units. 1.2 - These regulations apply to diesel traction engines for installation in railway vehicles with the exception of engines intended for special locomotives (e.g. refinery or mine locomotives) as well as traction engines with an effective output of less than 100 kW. 1.3- These regulations may be applied by the railways for their own use if they wish to obtain a comprehensive guarantee of service reliability for any particular type of diesel traction engine.

LOI refers to the mass loss of a combustion residue whenever it is heated in an air or oxygen atmosphere to high temperatures. In the cement industry, use of the term LOI normally refers to a mass loss in a sample heated to 950°C. To combustion engineers, the term LOI normally refers to mass losses in samples heated to temperatures normally less than 950°C. These test methods establish a procedure for determining LOI values for combustion residues heated to 750°C or 950°C. LOI values from these test methods can be used by industries that utilize combustion residues in various processes and products. If the solid combustion residue is heated to estimate the combustible or unburned carbon in the sample, it has been shown that LOI and estimation of unburned carbon do not necessarily agree well with each other and that LOI should not be used as an estimate of unburned carbon in all combustion residues. . Direct determination of unburned (combustible) carbon can be carried out using Test Method D 6316. If the solid combustion residue is heated to prepare an ash for the determination of the concentrations of major and minor elements, use the heating procedure described in Test Methods D 3682, D 4326, and D 6349, or the procedures for the 750°C LOI determination described in these test methods (Method A). If the solid combustion residue is heated to prepare an ash for the determination of the concentrations of trace elements, use the heating procedure described in Test Methods D 3683 and D 6357. Note 18212;Combustion residues produced in furnace operations or other combustion systems can differ from the ash yield, as determined in Test Methods D 3174 and D 5142, because combustion conditions influence the chemistry and amount of ash. Combustion causes an expulsion of all water, the loss of carbon dioxide from carbonates, the conversion of metal sulfides into metal oxides, metal sulfates and sulfur oxides, and other chemical reactions. Likewise, the “ash” obtained after igniting combustion residues can differ in composition and amount from Test Methods D 3174 and D 5142 ash yields because of different heating procedures, combustion of unburned carbon, and decomposition of materials in the residue.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the mass loss from solid combustion residues upon heating in an air or oxygen atmosphere to a prescribed temperature. The mass loss can be due to the loss of moisture, carbon, sulfur, and so forth, from the decomposition or combustion of the residue. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This part of ISO 8178 specifies the test cycles for the measurement and the evaluation of gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines coupled to a dynamometer. With certain restrictions, this part of ISO 8178 can also be used for measurements at site. The tests are carried out under steady-state operation using test cycles which are representative of given applications. This part of ISO 8178 is applicable to RIC engines for mobile, transportable and stationary use, excluding engines for motor vehicles primarily designed for road use. It may be applied to engines used, e.g. for earthmoving machines, generating sets and for other applications. For engines used in machinery covered by additional requirements (e.g. occupational health and safety regulations, regulations for powerplants) additional test conditions and special evaluation methods may apply.
