This part of IEC 60255 is based on 1EC 61000-4-3, referring to that publication where applicable, and specifies the general requirements for radiated electromagnetic field disturbance tests for measuring relays and protection equipment for power system protection, including the control, monitoring and process interface equipment used with those systems. The objective of the tests is to confirm that the EUT (equipment under test) will operate correctly when energised and subjected to an electromagnetic field from a radiation source operating within the frequency range 80 MHz to 1000 MHz. NOTE 1 The product standard IEC 60255-22-6 (based on IEC 61000-4-6) establishes the immunity of measuring relays and protection equipment over the frequency range of 0,15 MHz to 80 MHz. Also, amendment 1 (subclause 5.2) to IEC 61000-4-3 proposes to include frequencies up to 2 GHz to test for immunity against devices such as portable digital telephones. NOTE 2 The test methods defined in this standard are structured for the primary objective of establishing adequate repeatability of results at various test facilities for qualitative analysis of effects. The test methods using a portable transmitter are not taken into consideration here because the EMC directive now specifies a sweep test, calibrated field strengths must be used and the portable transmitter test is not generally reproducible. The requirements specified in this standard are applicable to measuring relays and protection equipment in an unused condition, and all tests specified are type tests only. note: * (specified in the first edition (1989) of this standard)

This part of IEC 60255 specifies the general requirements for the measurement of radio-frequency emissions emanating from measuring relays and protection equipment for power system protection, including the control, monitoring and process interface equipment used with such systems. It is based on CISPR 22 (see annex A). The limits of acceptable conducted and radiated emissions are specified and test procedures described. The object of the tests is to confirm that the equipment being tested will not cause conducted or radiated emissions above specified levels which might affect the satisfactory operation of other equipment. Any equipment or part of equipment which has the primary function of radio transmission and/or reception is excluded from this standard. The requirements specified in this document are applicable to measuring relays and protection equipment in a new condition, and all tests specified are type tests only.

This specification establishes general requirements for electromechanical relays with contact ratings from 25 amperes resistive (unless otherwise specified) and upward for use in electrical applications. Auxiliary contacts may be rated at lower currents. Relays covered by this specification are capable of meeting the electrical and environmental requirements when mounted directly to the structure of aircraft, missile, spacecraft, ship, and other primary vehicles or in ground support and shipboard equipment. Other ratings may be as specified (see 3.1). CAUTION: The use of any coil voltage less than the rated coil voltage will compromise the operation of the relay. For additional application and caution information, see 6.1
