This part of IEC 60728 is applicable to optical transmission system for broadcast signal transmission that consists of a head-end equipment, optical transmission lines, in-house wirings and a system outlet. The system is primarily intended for television and sound signals using analogue and/or digital transmission technology. This standard specifies the basic system parameters and methods of measurement for optical distribution system having a system outlet in order to assess the system performance and its performance limits. The purpose of this part of IEC 60728 is to describe the system specification of FTTH (fibre to the home) network for broadcast signal transmission. This standard is also applicable to the broadcast signal transmission using telecommunication network if it satisfies the optical portion of this standard. This standard describes RF transmission for broadcast and narrowcast (limited area distribution of broadcast) signals over FTTH, and introduces xPON system as a physical layer media. The detailed description of physical layer is out of the scope of this standard. The scope is limited to RF signal transmission over FTTH, thus, it does not include IP transport technologies, such as IP Multicast and associate protocols. Some interference descriptions between telecommunication system and broadcast system addressed in Clause 7 and Annex D should be referred to for detailed explanations. Annex A describes actual service systems with design consideration based on this standard. Annex B gives an overview of the optical transmission systems applicable for broadcast signal transmission.

This part of IEC 60728 provides the requirements and describes the implementation guidelines of RF cabling for two-way home networks; it is applicable to any home network that distributes signals provided by CATV/MATV/SMATV cable networks (including individual receiving systems) having a coaxial cable output. It is also applicable to home networks where some part of the distribution network uses wireless links, for example in place of the receiver cord. This part of IEC 60728 is therefore applicable to RF cabling for two-way home networks with wired cords or wireless links inside a room and primarily intended for television and sound signals operating between about 5 MHz and 3 000 MHz. The frequency range is extended to 6 000 MHz for distribution techniques that replace wired cords with a wireless two-way communication inside a room (or a small number of adjacent rooms) that uses the 5 GHz to 6 GHz band. In a building divided into apartment blocks, the distribution of the signals inside the home starts from the home network interface (HNI) up to the system outlet or terminal input. The requirements at the system outlet are given in IEC 60728-1, Clause 5 and the requirements at the HNI are given in IEC 60728-1, Clause 7. In Clause 5 of this standard additional requirements are given. This standard deals with various possibilities to distribute signals in a home network, using coaxial cables, balanced pair cables, fibre optic cables (glass or plastic) and also wireless links inside a room (or a small number of adjacent rooms) to replace wired cords. This standard gives references to basic methods of measurement of the operational characteristics of the home cable network in order to assess its performance. All requirements refer to the performance limits, which are obtained between the input(s) at the home network interface (HNI) and the output at any system outlet when terminated in a resistance equal to the nominal load impedance of the system, unless otherwise specified. Where system outlets are not used, the above applies to the terminal input. Clause 5 defines the performance limits measured at system outlet or terminal input for an unimpaired (ideal) test signal applied at the HNI. Under normal operating conditions for any analogue channel and meeting these limits, the cumulative effect of the impairment of any single parameter at the HNI and that due to the home network will produce picture and sound signals not worse than Grade four on the five-grade impairment scale contained in ITU-R BT.500. These requirements are given in IEC 60728-1-2. For digitally modulated signals the quality requirement is a QEF (Quasi Error Free) reception. This standard describes the physical layer connection for home networks. Description of protocols required for Layer 2 and higher layers is out of the scope of this standard. Logical connections between devices within the home network are therefore not always guaranteed.

This part of IEC 60728 specifies requirements for the Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) Outside Plant (OSP) Power Supplies (PS). This standard is part of a series developed to support the design and implementation of interoperable management systems for evolving HFC cable networks. The purpose of the standards is to support the design and implementation of interoperable management systems for evolving HFC cable networks. The Power Supply to Transponder Interface Bus (PSTIB) specification describes the physical (PHY) interface and related messaging and protocols implemented at the Data Link Layer (DLL), layers 1 and 2 respectively in the 7-layer ISO-OSI reference model, that support communications between compliant transponders and the managed OSP power supplies and other related power equipment to which they interface. This standard describes the PSTIB PHY and DLL layer requirements and protocols that shall be implemented to support reliable communications between all type 2 and type 3 compliant OSP transponders on the HFC plant and managed OSP power supplies and related hardware. Any exceptions to compliance with this standard will be specifically noted as necessary. Transponder type classifications referenced within the HMS series of standards are defined in Table 1.

This International Standard describes the Radio Data System, RDS, intended for application to VHF/FM sound broadcasts in the range 87,5 MHz to 108,0 MHz which may carry either stereophonic (pilot-tone system) or monophonic programmes ( see clause 2 – Normative references ITU-R Recommendations BS 450-3 and BS 643-2). The main objectives of RDS are to enable improved functionality for FM receivers and to make them more user-friendly by using features such as Programme Identification, Programme Service name display and where applicable, automatic tuning for portable and car radios, in particular. The relevant basic tuning and switching information therefore has to be implemented by the type 0 group (see 6.1.5.1), and it is not optional unlike many of the other possible features in RDS.
