The preparation of field logs provides documentation of field exploration procedures and findings for geotechnical, geologic, hydrogeologic, and other investigations of subsurface site conditions. This guide may be used for a broad range of investigations. The recorded information in a field log will depend on the specific purpose of the site investigation. All of the information given in this guide need not appear in all field logs. Note 18212;- The quality of the result produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D 3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective sampling. Users of this practice are cautioned that compliance with Practice D 3740 does not in itself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; Practice D 3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors.1.1 This guide describes the type of information that should be recorded during field subsurface explorations in soil and rock.1.2 This guide is not intended to specify all of the information required for preparing field logs. Such requirements will vary depending on the purpose of the investigation, the intended use of the field log, and particular needs of the client or user.1.3 This guide is applicable to boreholes, auger holes, excavated pits, or other subsurface exposures such as road side cuts or stream banks. This guide may serve as a supplement to Guide D 420.1.4 This guide may not be suited to all types of subsurface exploration such as mining, agricultural, geologic hazardous waste, or other special types of exploration.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.6 This guide offers an organized collection of information or a series of options and does not recommend a specific course of action. This document cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment. Not all aspects of this guide may be applicable in all circumstances. This ASTM standard is not intended to represent or replace the standard of care of which the adequacy of a given professional service must be judged, nor should this document be applied without consideration of a project''s many unique aspects. The word "Standard" in the title of this document means only that the document has been approved through the ASTM consensus process.

This part of BS 5628 gives general recommendations for the design, construction and workmanship of masonry, including materials and components and the main aspects of design, other than structural, which is covered by BS 5628-1 and -2. The recommendations in this standard are based on experience of single-leaf and cavity walls with and without insulation within the cavity. No specific recommendations for the use of random rubble walling are given, the methods of construction and appearance of which will vary locally according to the type of stone available and traditional practice. However, general principles are laid down in this standard. This standard does not cover the use of natural stone panels as cladding to structural masonry and steel and concrete frames. NOTE Recommendations about the use of natural stone panels as cladding to structural masonry and steel and concrete frames are given in BS 8298. This standard is not necessarily appropriate to the repair and restoration of old buildings. Guidance on cleaning and surface repair of masonry built of natural stone, cast stone and brick is given in BS 8221. This standard does not necessarily cover the use of proprietary systems. The user is referred to the particular recommendations of any technical approval in this case.

This Standard is applicable to the execution, testing and monitoring of jet grouting works. Design considerations, strictly related to jet grouting works only, are given in clause 7. More general requirements that could be included in, or substituted by clauses of future editions of Eurocode 7 are listed in Annex A. NOTE The jet grouting processes should be distinguished from the grouting processes covered by EN 12715.

The document establishes general principles for the execution of displacement piles which are installed in the ground without excavation or removal of material from the ground exept for limiting heave, vibration, removal of obstructions or to assist penetration. Piles are driven into the ground using impact, vibration, pressing, screwing or a combination of these methods. The material of displacement piles covered by this standard can be: steel, cast iron, concrete, timber, grout, combination of above.

This part of BS 5628 gives recommendations for the structural design of reinforced and prestressed masonry constructed of brick or block masonry or masonry of square dressed natural stone. NOTE 1 The partial safety factors given in this code are based on the assumption that the special category of construction control (see 3.1) will be specified by the designer. If this is considered to be impracticable, higher partial safety factors should be used. NOTE 2 The dimensions of a member determined from strength considerations may not always be sufficient to satisfy requirements for other properties of the member such as resistance to fire and thermal insulation, and reference should be made to other appropriate standards.

This standard is applicable to the installation, testing and monitoring of permanent and temporary ground anchors where the load capacity is tested. An anchor consists of an anchor head, A free anchor length and a fixed anchor length which is bonded to the ground by grout. The term "ground" is taken to encompass both soil and rock. The planning and design of ground anchors calls for experience and knowledge in this specialized field and although these topics are covered briefly in ENV 1997-1 Eurocode 7 : Geotechnical Design, Part 1 : General Rules a more detailed treatment of the design of ground anchors is included in an annex to this standard. The installation and testing phases require skilled and qualified labour and supervision. This standard cannot replace the knowledge of specialist personnel and the expertise of experienced contractors required to apply the standard. This standard does not address alternative systems of anchoring such as tension piles, screw anchors, mechanical anchors, soil nails, expander anchors or deadman anchors. The standard establishes and defines principles with regard to anchor technology. Where anchor systems do not comply with the principles defined in the text, flexibility in the use of these systems is offered by written acceptance of the Client's Technical Representative.

1.1 This practice covers a procedure for using a thin-walled metal tube to recover relatively undisturbed soil samples suitable for laboratory tests of engineering properties, such as strength, compressibility, permeability, and density. Thin-walled tubes used in piston, plug, or rotary-type samplers should comply with Section 6.3 of this practice which describes the thin-walled tubes. Note 1 - This practice does not apply to liners used within the samplers.1.2 This Practice is limited to soils that can be penetrated by the thin-walled tube. This sampling method is not recommended for sampling soils containing gravel or larger size soil particles cemented or very hard soils. Other soil samplers may be used for sampling these soil types. Such samplers include driven split barrel samplers and soil coring devices (D 1586, D 3550, and D 6151). For information on appropriate use of other soil samplers refer to D 6169.1.3 This practice is often used in conjunction with fluid rotary drilling (D 1452, D 5783) or hollow-stem augers (D 6151). Subsurface geotechnical explorations should be reported in accordance with practice (D 5434). This practice discusses some aspects of sample preservation after the sampling event. For information on preservation and transportation process of soil samples, consult Practice D 4220. This practice does not address environmental sampling; consult D 6169 and D 6232for information on sampling for environmental investigations.1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The SI values given in parentheses are provided for information purposes only. The tubing tolerances presented in are from sources available in North America. Use of metric equivalent is acceptable as long as thickness and proportions are similar to those required in this standard. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This practice offers a set of instructions for performing one or more specific operations. This document cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment. Not all aspects of this practice may be applicable in all circumstances.
